Xena Game Review

from Dreamwatch #56

Bacchus has spawned an army of bacchae, fanged vixens who attack and recruit young girls and kill anyone else. Xena, Gabrielle, and Joxer with the aid of Xena's former enemy Orpheus have to find out why Bacchus has turned evil and stop him if they can The idea of turning an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess into a computer game intrigued me, especially since Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is one of my favourite episodes. The cover blurb makes some impressive claims, each of which should unfortunately be taken with a pinch of salt. "Hundreds of story paths" is says, but each one of them still provides you with the same information and characters (none of which are voiced by the original actors) that the alternative paths would ultimately have provided. A different experience each time: true, but only if your want to differentiate between various shades of boredom and irritation. Multiple story endings: this I can't confirm because I was so bored by the slow pace and the diabolical CGI that I never made it to the end - and I tried more that once. I'm amazed that it's possible to destroy the eerie darkness of the original episode so completely that I'm not sure when I will be able to watch it again. I can't honestly think of a single redeeming feature that would merit a score for this CD-Rom game, so, for the first time ever, I am heartily recommending that it should have a health warning stamped on it and withdrawn immediately

Score 0

Any spelling mistakes are mine, I had to type it out because the scanner couldn't recognise the small print !! :-)

Have Fun
