Pasadena 2003 Xena Convention: Claire Stansfield & David Franklin, The Costumes
by Mesh
Claire Stansfield
- Claire started her own clothing line with a friend, the company is called C+C California. She told us she didn’t feel like auditioning anymore, and she uses her creativity to direct tributes to her pals and to make her quirky Xena movies with the action figures. She said she’s happy to have an office to work in, and her business took off, so she feels lucky to have found something gratifying.
- She said she’d love to be in the Xena movie, and would love for Katherine Fugate to write it, maybe put Alti in it too – she’d be grateful <g>.
- She thanked Katherine for using Alti in When Fates, she was the one who wanted Alti in that role, when TPTB thought about bringing someone else in. IMO the ep worked wonderfully with Alti.
- Claire spoke of the violence in Xena, how it was an integral part of it all, and how Alti has changed her, and empowered her.
- When asked about her role in Drop Zone (action flick from the early 90s with Wesley Snipes and Yancy Butler), she said she jumped out of a plane to get a feel of what a jump was like – she’ll never do it again.
- Claire is looking forward to seeing everyone at the Xena Cruise.
David Franklin
- Dave’s an Aussie. He wanted to be on Xena after he saw the show on the “telly”, so he told his agent to get him a role on the show. His agent disregarded his request, so he traveled to NZ, walked in, and graciously accepted the producers’ offer to read for a role. He got to be Brutus and was a happy camper.
- He thought a stunt double would do the scenes where head be dragged at length, but it he had to do it himself.
- He didn’t like the fight scenes, because he couldn’t look graceful in the armor he had on, he said he looked like a turtle. He was happy when they edited his scene and his doubles scene together and made him look good.
- He told us that Renee has changed a lot between the times he was on the show, she grew more confident.
- He was really unhappy about the fact that he got killed in When Fates.
- I love Dave on Farscape, so I was happy that others asked question about his other series. Dave’s been on FS for 3.5 years, he played Braca, Scorpius’ (Scorpy’s the main villain) aide. He said that both shows were a lot of fun, but they were very different in terms of the setting.
- Loved all the costumes people showed up in. Even though it was a bit sad to see that there were far less people attending the con, and the contest than 2 years ago, the quality of the costumes made up for it all. Jo's FIN costume looked brilliant, and the Callisto one with the arrows was a great idea (must have been hell walking around in it, not being able to sit down...). The "Xena & Gabby in bedroll" idea was hilarious, Linda's Janice, Wendy & Tara's Gabby costumes were both nice. The Twins looked adorable in their outfits, and the junior department was neat to see as well. My fave costume however was Deb's on the last day of the convention... I couldn't keep a straight face. THX guys for taking all the time and effort and making this a fun event for all of us.
