Con 2010
Lucy Part 2
Lucy said (I THINK talking
about the episode we were going to see tonight, episode 3),
“This show is more interesting to watch than some of the
others.”
She talked about acting and
how when the director asked the actors how they felt about the
scene and they thought they had nailed it they usually hadn’t.
“I wasn’t really there. When we felt really good about it, it
was bad acting”. And then sometimes, “We’d just let go and not
control the output. If when the director asked how we felt about
the scene, we’d answer, ‘I just don’t know’-that’s a good sign.”
She said something about
acting “Super small, naturalistic”. And I’m not sure which she
said, either “If you go to a close-up” or “If you don’t go to a
close-up, it’s not there”. I think it’s the second, because the
next line I’ve written down is, “And if you’re not the star, you
don’t get close-ups”.
Then I’ve scribbled down,
“Fire lanes”. <shrug>
I think a fan asked her
where they got the line, “I have many skills”. I believe she
asked Steve Sears if he had written it. I didn’t hear his answer
but she laughed and said that it was a line written by some
free-lancer and it became a bumper sticker that was everywhere
like the “My kid is an honor student” bumper stickers.
A fan called out that for
Spartacus they should say, “I have many wigs”. Lucy answered,
“Can’t do that” because if they did the fan would say, “Where’s
my 10%?”
Someone asked how many wigs
she had on Spartacus. And Lucy began to joke around. She said,
“1” and pantomimed pulling an imaginary wig off her head and
making a swooshing/almost unzipping noise as she did so, “2”
pulling an imaginary merkin off her crotch with the same sound
effect and then “3”, bending over and pulling one off her butt
again with the same sound.
A fan said that Xena was
such a great role model, unlike “Gossip Girls” which was all
about sex. And I think she asked how Lucy had done that. Lucy
said, “I was just the lucky face”, that the writers had done
that. She added, “I’ve never seen ‘Gossip Girls’ but I’m sure
it’s fine.”
Fan: “Does the merkin match
the wig color?”
Lucy slid right into acting
again. She checked out her crotch and said, “Oh damn-that’s
yesterday’s (color). She talked about her merkin. “It’s never
been worn. The crew framed it for me. As if I’d put it on the
wall of my house. They all signed it. Not the merkin, but around
the frame.”
Fan: “What color is the
merkin?” Lucy: “It happens to be a red one. A ginger munch.” (I
BELIEVE she said “munch”.)
A fan asked if she had ever
acted like Xena in real life. Lucy said that she found out
recently that, “I can go from zero to Xena in one-half second.”
She told us about walking along in a park and seeing a guy
pushing a little kid up a hill. Lucy walked past and then
thought that that was a little strange. She had a bad gut
feeling about it. So she picked up a stick and turned back. That
she knows if she gets that feeling, she knows without the shadow
of a doubt that she would protect a child. “I’d hope there’d be
a cleaver handy—or just my bare hands. She said the man and boy
were gone when she got back there. She said that this had “Made
me all over red-Xena blood rising.”
Fan: What would you do if
you couldn’t act. I have the initials “DRJ” written down and the
words, “World of Fantasy”. Then, “Forensic pathologist”. I think
the fan said, “Really?” and Lucy said yes. And then became the
forensic pathologist reporting her findings. “I don’t know why
this man has a cleaver in his head”. (Pause) “I think it’s an
accident”.
She said she used to not be
noticed very much when her hair was blond. But, “Once I cut my
bangs back and went back to my black hair-suddenly I’m famous
again” She said that Marrisa noticed this-that when they went
into a restaurant, everyone turned around to look at Lucy.”Gruff
guys would ask me, ‘Are you who we think you are?’”
A fan asked about where
they went to the bathroom when shooting Xena outdoors. “Another
fresh question. We had porta-johns. They splash back at you.”
She said sometimes you “Go like a bear in the woods to avoid the
porta-johns.”
Lucy suddenly mentioned
that there are a lot of “Fresh fans. They’re not disillusioned
yet.”
She was asked about working
with Kevin Smith. “Kevin was fantastic”. She suddenly looked
around the audience and explained that for the sake of the
Battlestar Galactica fans (and this generated smatterings of
applause in some areas) she said that he played the good
looking god of war on Xena. “We were like a brother and sister.
We took each other for granted. We’d kiss-but there was no
‘schwing’ Then he died and I said, ‘Damn! I should have enjoyed
that more’. Ren and I were just talking about him yesterday. He
doesn’t feel gone. He’s very present.”
At that point, there was a
little disturbance behind the curtain and Renee came out.
