Part IV

-- Chapter 24 --

Without the usual early-morning commotion, the village seemed eerily quiet.

As they made their way to the temple, the bard cast her partner an uneasy glance. "I guess almost everyone's already inside."

Xena nodded. "Everyone but us."

Gabrielle paused anxiously outside the temple doors. "I guess I can't put this off any longer, can I?"

Smiling softly, the warrior took her hand.

Eyes darting nervously, the bard gazed up at her companion. "You won't let go, will you?"

Xena squeezed lovingly and laced her fingers through the bard's "Never."

Inhaling deeply, Gabrielle opened the door.

As they entered, a sea of faces turned to them and a hush fell over the room. With every step they took, the temple's size seemed to increase, making their destination appear more and more distant. Never had Gabrielle felt such a strong urge to flee. Steeling her courage, she looked into the crowd and saw Ryder smiling supportively. One step at a time, she continued to the front of the room where her parents were seated.

As she turned to take her place beside them, Hecuba's proud smile warmed her heart. She glanced anxiously at her father.

Turning toward her, he took her into his arms, then, quite unexpectedly extended his hand to the warrior.

As the ceremony began, the bard thought of the lifelong commitment she and Xena had made to one another. For them there would be no wedding day, no public celebration, no parties, no gifts, nor any good wishes. They could never expect the unconditional acceptance her sister and Graham were being shown on this, their special day.

But as she stood beside the woman that she had chosen as her mate, an incredible sense of well-being washed over her. At last, she had made peace with herself. Asia had been right. In the end, that was all that truly mattered.

As Graham and her sister were pronounced husband and wife, Gabrielle smiled and turned to the warrior…who through it all, had never once let go of her hand.

*****

As they walked into the reception, Xena turned to the bard. "You okay?" she asked softly.

"Yeah, I really am," she smiled. "Let's go congratulate them."

As Gabrielle approached, her sister pulled her close, hugging her happily.

"Lila, you look absolutely beautiful! I'm so happy for you."

The bride beamed. "I'm so glad that you both could be here to share this with me."

"Me too." Turning to her sister's new husband, Gabrielle kissed him lightly on the cheek. "Welcome to the family, Graham."

"Congratulations," Xena offered. "The ceremony was beautiful."

Lila stepped forward to embrace the warrior. "Thanks for coming." She glanced across the room. "Mom has us seated at the center table. Why don't you two get something to drink and meet us there?"

Leaving the bride and groom, they waded through the crowd to make their way to the table.

Feeling a hand brush her arm, Gabrielle turned to see Marta, the woman from the market, her eyes wide with surprise.

"My!" she exclaimed. "You both look wonderful… so feminine. I'm glad to see that those nasty rumors I've been hearing are simply vicious lies."

Glancing at Xena, the bard rolled her eyes, then smiled innocently. "Rumors?"

"Why, yes…certain people have been spreading lies about you and your friend."

"What lies?" Gabrielle asked, making the woman squirm uncomfortably.

"I…uh…I don't know exactly how to say this, but there's been some talk that you two are more than just friends, if you know what I mean."

"Well, I can't just stand back and allow unsubstantiated rumors to spread, can I?"

"Exactly," the woman agreed. "That's what I thought too. You need to set things straight right away."

The bard turned to Xena. "Marta tells me that there are rumors circulating about us."

The warrior simply raised a brow, waiting for her partner's cue.

"I thought it best we clear them." She reached for Xena's hand, interlocking their fingers. "You could do us a big favor by passing the word that the rumors are true."

The woman's mouth dropped open. "B--but…you can't mean--"

"--Yes…Xena is my partner…in every sense of the word."

The woman blushed.

"By the way," the warrior commented politely, "that's a beautiful dress you have on."

Still stunned, the woman was slow to respond. "Do--do you think so?"

"Definitely. If I had found one like it at the market, I would have bought it for Gabrielle. Unfortunately, the things they had there were so common. Can I ask where you found it?"

The woman beamed. "Well, yes. Actually, I made it."

"You did a wonderful job," Xena praised.

Gabrielle nodded in agreement.

"Well, you know," Marta said, turning to the bard. "If you bring me the material, I'll be glad to make one for you."

"That’s really nice. I'd like that."

A rather meek man approached them. Marta turned to him. "Wilber, have you met Gabrielle's…partner, Xena?"

Having listened to his wife's gossip for days, he cast the tall woman a curious glance, then reached out to shake her hand.

"She's the warrior we've heard so much about over the past year," Marta remarked. "The one that does all those heroic deeds."

"Yes, I heard about the boys at the lake. Wonderful thing you two did."

Xena shrugged. "It's good to hear that they're doing okay."

Taking the bard's arm, Marta pulled her aside. "I know a great shop for material. We could go there sometime if you like."

"Thanks, that would be--"

"--Well," the warrior interrupted, rescuing her partner, "we'd better get back to the family."

"Yes," the bard agreed. "It was nice talking to you, Marta, Wilber." Taking Xena's hand, she quickly guided her to the corner of the room.

As they walked away, Marta turned to her husband. "Well, I must say that situation is a bit odd."

Wilber shrugged and lifted his cup to take a swig of ale.

*****

"I'm going to get a glass of punch. Want some?" Gabrielle offered.

"Nah, I'm fine. I'll wait here." Leaning against the wall, Xena's eyes followed the bard as she made her way to the serving table. Suddenly, her body tensed. Across the room, three men pointed to the bard and slowly began to approach her. Sensing trouble, the warrior watched uncomfortably as Gabrielle looked up and noticed them for the first time.

It took all of Xena's will power not to go to her, not to take control of the situation. Instead, she held back. As difficult as it was, she knew it was important to let Gabrielle handle this in her own way. Watching intently, she never took her eyes off the bard.

Closing in on the young woman like wolves stalking a lamb, the men surrounded her. "I hear you're one of those queers," the tallest of them said.

He drew out the last word in a hateful drawl that made the bard wince. Standing her ground, she watched his eyes, knowing that they would warn of his intent. "And why should that matter to you?" she questioned.

"We don't want queers in our town."

"And why's that?"

"You're perverts. First thing we know, you'll be corrupting our children."

Gabrielle turned, addressing the only of one of the three she knew. "Seth, my mother and I helped your wife give birth to your twin sons. Do you really think I'd do anything to harm them?

He looked away sheepishly. "I--I'm sorry Gab. I told them they were wrong about you. I knew the rumors about you couldn't be true…that you couldn't really be 'that way.'"

"Well, I am that way," she admitted. "In fact, I always have been…even back when your father fell ill and I joined the neighbors to help you bring in his crops. I'm still the same person. I haven't changed. If you needed my help, I'd still be there for you. Are you telling me you wouldn't be there for me, now that you know?"

"Well, no, I…uh…I guess you're different than the other ones."

"And how many 'other ones' do you know?"

"Well, I--I--" He stuttered as he tried to defend his theory. "None, but I--"

"--I can assure you that there have been others…maybe even others that have helped you…but like with me, you just didn't know it."

He looked down at his shoes. "Look, Gabby, I'm sorry." Embarrassed he turned to his friends. "Come on, guys. Let's go."

The shortest of the men stepped forward, refusing to back off. "You know what I think? I think that you just haven't had the right man." He smiled at his buddies. "But don't worry--I can fix that."

She rolled her eyes. "Thanks, but I think I'll pass."

Grabbing her arm, he began pulling her toward the side door.

Ready to intervene, Xena took a step forward.

Herodotus, who was watching from the other side of the room, rose from his seat.

Laying a gentle hand on his shoulder, Hecuba stopped him. "Wait, give her a chance. Sooner or later, she's going to have to deal with this kind of thing."

His jaw tightened. "I don't know. I don't like the looks of this."

Hecuba glanced across the room at Xena and noted, with relief, that the warrior's complete attention was focused on her daughter.

Uncomfortable with his friend's actions, Seth and the other man moved to stop him, but before they could intercede, Gabrielle took action.

Stepping to the side, she twisted free of his grip, and in one clean motion, she caught his wrist and twisted his arm behind his back. Yanking up forcefully, she leaned close to his ear. "I said no. Do you have a problem understanding that?"

"Okay, okay," he grunted, in obvious discomfort.

She cast a glance at his two friends. "Is he the kind of person you'd rather have around your children?" Releasing him in disgust, she turned and made her way across the room toward Xena.

Exhaling the breath he'd been holding, Herodotus set down his glass and went out the side door.

*****

"Want a sip of my punch?" the bard asked, holding it out to her partner.

Smiling proudly, the warrior accepted. "I'm impressed. That was very smooth."

"I guess I've learned a few things from you about defending myself."

"Funny," Xena grinned. "I don't recall ever teaching you that particular move."

Gabrielle shrugged. "Must be something I picked up on my own."

"Mmm," the warrior agreed. "No doubt."

The bard smiled. "Hey, mind if we sit with Lila and Graham?"

"No, go ahead. I'll join you shortly." Looking past the bard, she watched as Gabrielle's harasser walked toward the exit. As he pushed open the back door to leave, she made her way through the crowd of people.

*****

Facing the bushes, the man quickly unfastened his trousers. Before he could begin to urinate, a dark shadow fell across him. Turning, he was startled to see a tall, dark-haired woman standing at his side. "What the--"

"--So you like the ladies, huh?" Xena said, smiling sweetly. Quickly reaching out, she grabbed him by the throat. "I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself. Remember the woman you were threatening earlier?" She paused for effect. "Well, turns out she's my girlfriend." Sliding her dagger from her boot, she held it up for him to see.

"I--I didn't mean anything by it," he stammered. "R--really!"

She slowly lowered the knife to his groin and watched him tremble.

"Please!" he begged.

Distracted by a twig snapping to her left, Xena looked up to see Gabrielle's father.

Laying his hand on her shoulder, he spoke calmly. "No need to be rash. I'm sure he regrets his earlier indiscretion. Don't you?"

Sweating profusely, the man nodded. "Y--yes, I do."

Herodotus turned to Xena. "More often than not, I've found words to be more effective than force."

"Words, huh?" Glancing down pointedly at the man's flaccid penis, she shrugged. "Okay, then let me give you a bit of advice here. Unless you want to lose that rather pathetic piece of equipment, I suggest you stop threatening women with it." Releasing him with a shove, she slid the dagger back into her boot.

His courage bolstered by Herodotus' intervention, the man quickly fastened his trousers and looked at the warrior. "It's not my fault that you can't keep your girlfriend's interest. She was the one flirting with me. I've never seen anyone so hot for it."

Without hesitation, Herodotus turned and punched him hard in the stomach.

The air left the man's lungs in a great whoosh, doubling him over. As he gasped for breath, Herodotus leaned over him. "I take exception to someone insulting my daughter's taste. If I were you, I'd leave town before the end of today's festivities, because if either of us happens upon you, I promise that you'll regret it."

As they walked back to the reception, Xena cast Herodotus a curious glance.

"What can I say?" he shrugged. "I was wrong to lose my temper."

"I don't know," the warrior replied. "Although words certainly have their place, I've always believed that there are certain situations that call for force…and in my opinion this was clearly one of them."

Eyes sparkling mischievously, he nodded. "Xena, I think you just may be right." Pulling the door open, he motioned her in ahead of him.

*****

Gabrielle watched anxiously as her partner entered the side door with her father. "Everything okay?" she asked.

"Fine," the warrior replied.

"Something happen that I should know about?"

"We can talk later. Right now, I feel like a dance. You up to it?"

"Sure."

Xena had just placed her arm at the bard's waist, when she felt a hand tap her on the shoulder.

It was Herodotus.

"Mind if I have the first one?"

Nodding, the warrior graciously stepped away.

As he moved his daughter gracefully around the floor, Herodotus smiled. "You know, I think this may be the first time we've ever danced together."

"It is." Taking a deep breath, she met his eyes. "When I was growing up, I didn't feel comfortable enough with myself to even learn to dance. Xena finally taught me."

Herodotus lowered his eyes sadly. "I'm sorry that I've been so hard-headed about your relationship with her. It's just not what I had envisioned for you."

"I understand."

He sighed wistfully. "You know, I was looking forward to at least a couple of grandchildren from you."

She smiled softly. "You were, huh?"

Suddenly, wondering about the warrior's masculine ways, he cast her a worried glance. "There's no chance of that," he asked, arching his brow, "is there?"

Gabrielle laughed. "No, Dad… absolutely no chance." She squeezed his hand. "Don't worry, though. I'm sure Lila and Graham will give you lots of grandkids."

He nodded. "Yeah, I suppose so. But I'd kind of been looking forward to miniature versions of you running around someday."

"Yeah, just what you need…more grief."

"Nah, you haven't been bad at all." Looking at her thoughtfully, he slowed his steps until they were almost standing in place. "I'll let you in on a secret. Almost every father wants grandchildren, once his own kids have grown."

"To carry on his name?"

"There is that, of course. But for me, at least, I've always thought of it as a second chance: a chance to spend more time…a chance to do things differently. When you and your sister were kids, I was too young and too busy making a go of the farm to appreciate you." He released a heavy sigh. "I regret that. The time flew by so quickly that you were grown before I knew it."

Gabrielle's heart swelled with emotion.

He stopped dancing, his expression serious. "That first night that you arrived, after you and Lila went out to the barn, Xena took me aside and told me that if I took the time to find about more about you, I'd be proud of the good you've done with your life."

"She--she's used to speaking her mind," Gabrielle said nervously. "I'm sure she didn't mean to be disrespect--"

He held up a hand to interrupt. "No, she was right. And I should have told you long ago…the pride I felt whenever someone came to town with news of your adventures." He met her eyes. "But through all the years, I have to say that I've never been more proud of you than when I saw you walk into that temple. That took a lot of guts. It was the right thing to do. Don't ever apologize for who you are or what you believe in. You're a good person."

Never in her life had she loved her father more than she did at that moment. "Thanks, Dad."

He nodded. "By the way, I don't know what your plans were after the reception, but I wanted to tell you that you're welcome to stay in your old room, at the house…both of you."

Gabrielle was speechless.

"Unless of course, Xena's really so attached to that mare of hers that she'd rather stay in the barn."

She smiled and hugged him warmly. "Thanks, I'll ask her."

*****

Seeing Asia across the room, the warrior walked toward her.

"I must say," the prophet winked, "you certainly look much happier than when I saw you last."

Xena smiled. "As always, your observation is amazingly accurate."

"Should I take that as a compliment?"

Nodding, the warrior averted her eyes. "Look…uh…I want to apologize for the way I acted the other day. I was wrong."

"Well, we all make mistakes."

Xena sighed heavily. "Yeah, some of us more than others." She met the prophet's eyes. "I really appreciate the way you looked out for Gabrielle when she needed a friend. I won't forget it."

"I was glad to. Gabrielle's quite special."

"Yes, she is." Once again doubting her worthiness to be with the bard, the warrior released a heavy sigh.

"You know," Asia remarked, "your partner's a very smart woman. Not many of the people I encounter have chosen their mates so wisely."

"I hope you're right about that, for Gabrielle's sake." Reaching out, Xena offered her hand.

Gripping it firmly, Asia looked up, her eyes suddenly a vivid blue. "I'd wish you luck," she smiled, "but I can see you really won't be needing it."

*****

"Hey, Gabrielle."

"Hi, Ryder." The bard motioned to the empty seat beside him. "Mind if I sit?"

"No, not at all. Rose just left to go talk with some friends."

"So, are you two here together?"

"Yeah," he smiled. "I guess you could say that."

"It's good to see you looking so happy," the bard commented.

"Well, for the first time in my life, I know what I want. That's a comfortable feeling."

Gabrielle squeezed his hand. "I know what you mean."

"So I guess you and Xena will be leaving town soon."

"In the morning, I think."

"That's too bad. I'm really going to miss you."

"Me too," she sighed, embracing him warmly. Pulling back, she winked. "Of course, you could always bring me back for another wedding."

He smiled. "I'd like that, but this time, I'm not rushing things. I want to do it right."

The bard smiled softly. "So how's Emma enjoying her new room?"

"Are you kidding? She loves it. I've never seen her happier. She's really coming out of her shell."

"I'm glad to hear it."

"Gab, I don't know how to thank you for everything. Discovering the truth about Emma has turned my life around."

"You should be proud. She's a wonderful girl…bright and giving."

"Yeah." He sighed happily. "You know, in a way she reminds me of you, maybe because you have so many of the same interests."

Gabrielle raised her eyes to meet his and smiled. "You know Ryder, I think you may be right about that."

*****

Taking a seat with Graham and his new bride, Xena waited for her partner to return.

"Gabrielle found the perfect dress for you," Lila complimented. "It really looks terrific."

"Thanks."

"It's been nice getting to know you better," Lila remarked. "I'm really going to miss you and Gab."

"Us too. I really appreciate how supportive you've both been."

Graham turned to her, a questioning look on his face. "Xena, can I ask you something?"

"I guess so."

"It's not that I have a problem with you and Gabrielle. I mean, what you do…that's your business. But, honestly, I don't get it. You're both attractive women. Did you have bad experiences with guys or--"

Smiling, Lila interrupted him. "--Honey, if that's all it took, none of us would be with men."

Graham blushed hotly. "It's just hard to wrap my mind around it, that's all. Your really not into men at all?"

"Nope," the warrior confessed. "It's nothing personal. The attraction's just not there."

"But it is for women?"

"Um-hmm." She searched for a way to explain. "Try turning things around. Are you attracted to any of the men in this room?"

"Of--of course not!" he stammered.

"That's how I feel too."

He paused to mull it over. "So, are you attracted to all women?"

"Uhhh…no, just Gabrielle." Seeing his confusion, she continued. "Are you attracted to all women?"

"Errr, no…absolutely not. I'm married to Lila." He swallowed hard. "She's the only woman for me."

"And Gabrielle's the only woman for me."

"Hmmm."

"What is it?" Xena asked.

"Well…I thought it would be polite if I asked you to dance, but--"

"--But what?"

"I turned it around and asked myself if I'd want to dance with George over there." He smiled sheepishly. "And, frankly, I wouldn't want to."

Xena laughed. "I don't want to dance with George either, but I'd enjoy dancing with you. That is, if Lila doesn't mind."

*****

As the music came to a close, Graham bowed politely. "Thanks, Xena."

Stepping up beside her, Gabrielle tapped the warrior's shoulder. "Miss me?"

"Definitely."

"I'm sorry about all this. I know it isn't exactly your thing."

"Actually, it hasn't been bad," the warrior admitted. "Graham's really a pretty good guy."

"Yeah, I think so too." Pulling her partner aside, Gabrielle looked up at her gratefully.

"What is it?"

"I just wanted to thank you for everything…for coming back…for standing by me…for letting me find my own way."

Xena brushed her arm affectionately. "Speaking of finding one's way…." The warrior glanced to the other end of the room. "Did you notice Emma and her friend at the corner table?"

Gabrielle looked up and saw Rose's daughter shyly talking with another young girl her age. She smiled.

"How'd the dance with your father go?"

"Great, actually. You're not going to believe this, but he asked us to stay the night at the house."

"You're kidding!"

"He did make one stipulation, though."

"I could see this coming," Xena said rolling her eyes. "What was it?"

"You'll have to leave Argo in the barn."

Xena twisted her mouth in a playful smirk. "Everyone's a comedian."

"You can't really blame him. Every time they turned around, you were running to see to Argo."

"I think you'd better be nice to me or I'll spend tonight with her instead."

"Ah, come on. You know I'm a lot more fun."

"Yeah, but you steal the covers."

*****

Herodotus and his wife sat holding hands watching the festivities.

"Where have the years gone?" he questioned.

She turned to him. "You know, dear, I find myself wondering the same thing."

"It seems that our girls have grown up overnight."

Hecuba sighed wistfully and looked out onto the dance floor. "They make a good-looking couple, don't you think?"

"Mmm," he agreed. "She certainly looks…different, out of her leathers."

Hecuba smiled. Even though she'd been referring to Lila and Graham, she saw no reason to correct him. "I don't think that I've ever seen Gabrielle happier."

"Yeah," he admitted. "I haven't seen her smile like that since she was a child."

"I'm going to hate to see them go. Gabrielle mentioned that they would be leaving in the morning."

"About that. I hope you don't mind, but I told her that she and Xena could spend the night at the house if they wanted."

"Herodotus, you never cease to amaze me."

He shrugged. "Well, with Lila gone, the place is going to seem pretty empty tonight."

Bending forward, Hecuba lovingly kissed her husband's cheek.

*****

"Mind if I cut in?" Herodotus asked, tapping his daughter's shoulder.

Gabrielle's brow arched in surprise. "Back for another one already, Dad?"

"Actually, I was cutting in on you."

Gabrielle's jaw dropped as she stepped back.

"Xena, care to dance?"

"Why not."

Holding out his hand, he winked. "Just remember, it's my lead."

Nodding, the warrior smiled.

"I wanted to apologize," he began, clearing his throat nervously. "I--"

"--Forget it. I'm sorry about the way things happened. I know it's been difficult."

"Yeah, well, the best things in life usually are." Pulling her close, he gracefully twirled her around the room.

-- Chapter 25 --

"Mom, can I give you a hand with dinner?"

"No, thanks honey, it's pretty much ready. I've just got to run to the neighbors with this soup. Your father and I try to get at least one meal over to him a day since his wife passed on."

"I could take it for you, if you want."

"Thanks, but we should visit for a while. I don't think we'll be gone more than a couple of candlemarks.

"At least let me set the table."

"Okay, there's a clean tablecloth in your bedroom closet, on the top shelf." She called to her husband. "Herodotus, you ready?"

Rising from his chair, he took the pot from her. "See you girls later."

As the door closed, Gabrielle turned to see her companion kneeling at the hearth, adding kindling to the fire. The sight was achingly familiar, one she had seen countless times before. Yet, never had her partner looked more beautiful to her than she did at this moment. In the glow of the firelight, Xena was absolutely breathtaking. It was all the young woman could do not to go to her…all she could do not to take her in her arms and make love to her in front of the fire. Her skin tingled as she remembered her dream and how the warrior had used the fire to arouse her.

Swallowing hard, she pushed the thought back and walked to her bedroom. As she went to the closet, memories of the warrior sitting topless on the bed flashed through her mind. Inhaling deeply, she reached for the top shelf, but even on tiptoe, she was still too short to grab the tablecloth. Envisioning the warrior and her long, lean body Gabrielle smiled. She was definitely going to need a hand with this. Stepping back, she called to her companion. "Xena, can you help me in here?"

*****

"What do you need?" the warrior asked, peering in the doorway.

"Well… three things, really." She paused. "First, I was hoping you could get the tablecloth down from the top shelf of the closet."

Without hesitation, Xena walked across the room to retrieve it.

The bard closed the bedroom door and turned, her eyes riveted on the warrior as she reached up into the closet. Stretched to her full length, Xena's every curve was accentuated. Gabrielle longed to pull the powerful woman back against her and run her hands lovingly over each and every one, longed to feel the warrior melt under her touch.

"Is this the one?"

"Mm-hmm," the bard replied dreamily. Still caught up in her fantasy, she felt her pulse race as she considered how easy it would be to pull the warrior onto the bed and….

"Okay, what was the second thing?" Xena asked.

"I…uh…." Gabrielle swallowed hard and paused to compose herself. "I wanted ask you to be sure to compliment Mother on dinner tonight. She's making pheasant with her special seasoning."

"Is it any good?"

Distracted, the blonde nodded.

"Great, I'm really hungry."

Her mind elsewhere, the bard smiled. "She seasons it with honey."

Unaware of the change in her companion, Xena licked her lips. "Mmm, sounds delicious…sweet and sticky and…."

No longer able to hold back, Gabrielle reached out and laid her hand on the warrior's hip, gently drawing her closer.

As Xena met her lover's eyes, her breath caught. The bard's desire was unmistakable. "Uh…maybe I should see how the fire's coming along."

Gabrielle smiled seductively. "But don't you want to know the third thing?"

The warrior's skin tingled as the warmth of the bard's hand penetrated her thin tunic. Her mind flashed back to their last time together…the sound of her young lover's moans, the….

Gabrielle spoke, pulling the dark-haired woman from the memory. "You know, I was thinking--"

"--Oh, no." Xena shook her head firmly and reached for the door handle.

"Wait! You don't even know what I was going to say."

"Oh, but I do. I can read your mind, my horny little bard."

Gabrielle cast her a wounded glance. "I just wanted to sneak a quick kiss."

The warrior struggled against temptation, knowing how difficult it would be for both of them to stop with just a kiss. "Maybe you haven't noticed, but it's not my nature to sneak. Besides, when it comes to kisses, I don't do 'quick.'"

The bard leaned closer, closing the gap between them. Smiling sweetly, she ran her finger lazily along the warrior's forearm. "Well, maybe you could make an exception…for me."

"You're playing with fire," Xena warned.

"It wouldn't be the first time," she said with a wink. "In fact, I've become quite partial to the elements."

The lustful sparkle in the bard's eyes made the warrior's pulse quicken. She motioned to the door. "What about your parents?"

"They won't be back for at least a candlemark…probably two. Come on, it's just a kiss."

Casting her a doubtful glance, Xena paused. "I…ah…I think we should wait until we leave town."

"B--but we're not leaving until morning," the bard stuttered. "I'm not even sure I can even make it through dinner."

Xena rolled her eyes and once again took hold of the door handle.

Quickly reaching out, Gabrielle closed her fingers around the warrior's wrist. "One kiss," she whispered, her voice low and sensual. "I know you want to." She teasingly brushed her lips across the sensitive flesh below Xena's ear. "Please…."

"Gabrielle, I--" The warrior inhaled sharply as she felt the tip of her lover's tongue trace the curve of her neck.

"Yesss?" the bard purred. Not bothering to wait for her companion to finish her thought, she closed her lips on the sensitive flesh at the base of the warrior's neck.

All interest in conversing gone, Xena tilted her head to the side and released a soft moan of encouragement.

Gabrielle smiled triumphantly. "I'm obsessed, you know. All I can think of is being with you." She lifted the warrior's hand and tenderly brushed Xena's fingers against her lips. Encountering no resistance, she guided them down to her waist and sighed. "Do you have any idea how badly I want to feel you inside me?"

The young woman's words made the warrior's pulse race.

Gliding her hand behind Xena's neck, Gabrielle gently coaxed her forward. "Haven't you wondered how it would feel to slide your fingers into me?"

Lost in the bard's eyes, Xena couldn't speak.

"Well, I have," the young woman confessed. "Many…many times."

Gabrielle's need was scorching in its intensity, easily melting away what little remained of the warrior's resistance. Xena groaned in defeat and grasped the bard's hips, pressing her back against the door. Without hesitation, she bent to Gabrielle's trembling lips and kissed her.

The bard held back nothing, her body responding instantly as a wave of heat rushed through her. Head reeling, she sighed in pleasure.

Taking full advantage, the warrior slid her tongue into the yielding warmth of her lover's mouth and moaned with delight.

Gabrielle pulled back breathlessly and looked into the powerful woman's eyes. The hunger she saw within them was startling…a hunger beyond controlling…a hunger that no mere kiss would satisfy.

"Now I want it all," Xena purred, her tone low and commanding. Pulling Gabrielle to her, she kissed her wantonly, her tongue taking possession as her hands moved greedily up the bard's thigh, sliding slowly beneath her skirt.

Gabrielle gasped, her heart hammering wildly. The warrior would have what she wanted…what they both needed.

In a fluid motion, Xena pushed the skirt up over the bard's hips. Releasing the tie to her lover's breeches, she let the soft material fall to the to the floor and dropped to her knees.

Gabrielle's body quivered with anticipation. She knew what was to come…knew the warrior would take her as she had asked. Her head rolled back as she felt the warrior's hands slide between her thighs, urging her to open. Trembling, she gripped Xena's shoulders and widened her stance.

Inhaling deeply, the warrior savored her young lover's scent as her long fingers slid between Gabrielle's soft folds. "Mmm…you've been thinking of this all day, haven't you?"

The bard arched her hips forward in a silent reply.

Enjoying every moment of the seduction, Xena's fingers slowly opened her young lover.

She could see every exquisite detail outlined in the soft glow of the afternoon light. Pink and flush, the bard's sex glistened with moisture as her clit strained against its hood, swollen and ready. The warrior sighed in appreciation and slowly drew her fingers across her lover's heat, lightly caressing her.

A sound of utter satisfaction escaped the bard's lips, the sensation of Xena's fingers gliding through her silky softness, unbearably sweet. Closing her eyes, she moaned in rapture.

Smiling with satisfaction, Xena poised a single finger at Gabrielle's opening, circling it teasingly before slipping just the tip inside. "Is this what you wanted?"

Heart pounding, the bard struggled to find her voice.

Taking care not to move past the first knuckle, the warrior spiraled slowly inside, lightly stroking her inner walls. "Is this enough," she whispered, "or do you need more?"

Gabrielle groaned loudly.

"Mmm, yes." Xena smiled. "I want more too." Pulling back, she added a second finger, stretching her lover wider. "Can you feel me now?"

Gabrielle's breath escaped in a soft hiss as the warrior's fingers pressed inside, coaxing her taut muscles to give way.

"I can feel you…." she purred, "warm…and tight. You were made for me." Enveloped in her lover's heat, Xena sighed and pushed deeper. "Yes, that's it…. relax. Let me in."

The glorious feeling of her lover's fingers caressing her inner walls threatened to overwhelm her. Never had she experienced anything like it. Incredible sensations coursed through her. It was utter bliss. She wanted more, longed to feel the full length of the warrior's fingers within her. Nearly delirious with pleasure, Gabrielle pleaded softly. "Deeper. I--I need you deeper."

Without hesitation, the warrior pressed further, then slid back. It was difficult to go slowly, nearly impossible to hold back. "Yessss…sooo good."

Gabrielle was lost in the perfect rhythm of her partner's caress, her pleasure indescribable.

Xena advanced and retreated over and over again as bard's inner muscles contracted, attempting to draw her in. Still, the warrior retained control, allowing the bard to gain only minimal ground before she eased her fingers back.

The young woman moaned, her body tingling with pleasure as Xena moved effortlessly inside her. Trembling, she leaned into the warrior for support. "Pleassse. I--I…Oh…gods!!"

Surrounded by Gabrielle's warm, wet heat, Xena could no longer hold back. Groaning, she brushed her thumb over the delicate swell of the bard's clitoris and slid all the way in.

The sensation was pure ecstasy. Delirious with pleasure, the bard felt the world around her fade away. Xena was all she knew: Xena's touch…Xena's heat…Xena's fingers filling her.

Feeling Gabrielle's muscles grip her tightly, the warrior reached up with her free hand and tore the bard's shirt open. Leaning forward, she hungrily closed her mouth on her young lover's fully erect nipple.

It was more than Gabrielle could bear. The added stimulation sent her plummeting over the edge. Arching her hips, she surrendered to her pleasure, the powerful orgasm claiming her. Helpless to control her response, she released a long low moan, her sex pulsing wildly as spasm after spasm rippled through her. Clinging desperately to her lover, she swooned in the warrior's arms, her powerful climax draining the last of her strength.

Slowly lowering her to the floor, Xena held her for long moments before gradually withdrawing her fingers.

Sighing at the loss, Gabrielle groaned and hugged the dark-haired woman to her.

"You okay?"

Inhaling deeply, she nodded. "That was sooooo good."

"Think you can make it through dinner now?" the warrior teased.

Gabrielle kissed her softly. "Mmm, I think that should hold me at least until dessert."

Xena shook her head. "You're insatiable."

Glancing down at her tattered top, the bard brushed the jagged edges with her fingertips and sighed. "I can't help it. You're so good at being bad."

"What about you!" the warrior exclaimed.

The bard batted her eyes innocently. "Me?"

Xena couldn't help but smile. "Your father's right. You do know just what to say to get what you want."

"Well, Asia did say that words were my way."

"Mmm, I'd be the last to disagree."

Gabrielle grinned. "I guess I should change clothes." Pulling off her tattered shirt, she tossed it playfully at the warrior. "I can see where this new aspect of our relationship is going to be tough on our wardrobes."

"That's what you get for tempting me."

"Sorry, but I can't seem to help myself," the bard admitted.

"Mmm," Xena purred. "So I've noticed."

Taking a new top from their saddlebags, Gabrielle quickly pulled it over her head and turned to the door.

The warrior cleared her throat. "Forget something?" Picking up the young woman's breeches, she dangled them on her index finger.

"Oops. I…uh…."

The warrior rolled her eyes. "You seem to have a bad habit of leaving these behind."

Blushing, the bard spoke up quickly. "I--I can explain."

"Good, I'm glad to hear it. I can hardly wait."

Grabbing her breeches from her partner, Gabrielle quickly pulled them on and straightened her skirt. "Later, I promise." Smiling teasingly, she opened the bedroom door.

*****

"Anyone like some more tea?" Hecuba asked.

"No thanks mom, I'm fine."

"Me too, the meal was excellent," Xena commented.

"Then you liked the way the pheasant was seasoned?"

Looking pointedly at Gabrielle, the warrior licked the fingers that so recently had coaxed her lover to climax. "Just delicious," Xena winked.

Feeling the heat rush to her face Gabrielle quickly looked away.

The warrior turned to the bard's mother and smiled. "You've created something very special. I think I'd like seconds."

"Why certainly," Hecuba beamed. As she handed her the platter, she glanced at her daughter. "You look a little flushed, dear. Are you feeling okay?"

"Mom, I can honestly say I've never been better."

*****

As she closed the door to the bedroom, Xena looked up nervously. "I can't believe your parents are allowing us to sleep in the same room."

Gabrielle smiled. "I think the operative word here is sleep."

"Right, maybe it would be best if you took the bed, then. I'll be fine on the floor."

"You're kidding! We've finally got my parents' blessings and you're going to sleep on the floor?"

"Yep."

"B--but why? All I want to do is sleep in your arms."

Xena rolled her eyes. "Uh-huh, where have I heard that before?" She turned from the bard and spread out a blanket next to the bed. "Goodnight, Gabrielle."

Unable to mask her disappointment, the young woman released a frustrated sigh. "I--I don't believe this."

"Believe it. I'm not taking any more chances. I think we proved this afternoon that neither one of us can be trusted. We're like a couple of cats in heat."

The bard paused thoughtfully. "Okay, maybe you're right."

"I know I am."

Smiling mischievously, the bard curled on her side and leaned over the edge of the bed. "Goodnight, Xena and sweet dreams."

Sitting up, the warrior pointed a stern finger in warning. "Don't even think about it."

"What?" the bard replied absently.

"Don't play innocent with me."

"What? You think I'm planning to pull you into my dreams?"

"Well…aren't you?"

"Why is it that when your subconscious wanders, you can't help it? But with me, it's planned?"

"You're right. I'm sorry."

"Well," Gabrielle confessed, "to be truthful, the idea had crossed my mind." Giving the warrior her most beseeching glance, she pulled back the covers. "Please… it's cold up here without you."

Xena considered only a moment before climbing into bed. "Okay, you win, but try to be good."

Gabrielle smiled contentedly as she curled into the warrior's arms. "Oh I promise…I will be."

*****

The warrior watched her young lover sleep for some time, before bending down to awaken her with a kiss.

At the first gentle brush of Xena's lips, the bard stirred and slowly focused.

"Good morning."

"Mmmm," the bard smiled. "It sure is."

"Maybe we should get up and make breakfast for your folks before we head off."

Gabrielle frowned. "Not yet. I've dreamed of waking up in real bed with you for so long. Please…just a little longer."

Smiling, Xena pulled her close.

Nuzzling her cheek into the softness of the warrior's chest, she sighed contentedly.

"Hey, what's going on down there?" Xena teased.

"I was just listening to your heart, that's all."

"Uh, so is it still in there?"

"Yep. It's pounding away--quite fast actually."

"Yeah well, the location of your hand might have something to do with that," the warrior suggested.

"Oops, sorry. That was an accident, honestly."

"Hmm, likely story."

"It's true." Suddenly, Gabrielle's stomach growled loudly.

"Sounds like your beast has arisen." Xena smiled. "Maybe I should untangle myself and get you something to eat." Shifting, she began to slide out from under her young lover.

"Wait. I want to say good morning properly." Rising to her elbows, she kissed the warrior tenderly.

Lovingly running her fingers through the blonde's hair, Xena attempted to smooth it out.

Gabrielle blushed. "It's this short haircut. I--"

"--You never looked more beautiful."

"You like it?"

"It's very sexy."

"Really?"

Xena nodded and threw her legs over the side of the bed. "So much so that I think we'd better get up."

*****

The four of them stood outside the house, awkward in their goodbyes.

"So, which trail to Amphipolis do you prefer, the upper or the lower?" Herodotus asked.

"The lower," the warrior stated. "It's quicker."

He glanced at his daughter, waiting for her to comment. "I thought for sure you'd want to take the upper trail, this being prime strawberry season and all."

"Nah," Gabrielle replied casually, "Xena likes to make time on the road. The other way cuts off several candlemarks."

Hecuba stepped forward with tears in her eyes and embraced her daughter. "I'm going to miss you so much honey."

"Me too, Mom."

"Please don't let too much time pass before your next visit."

Herodotus turned to the warrior. "I trust you'll watch out for her…make sure she doesn't get herself into too much trouble."

"You can count it," Xena promised, extending her hand.

He gripped it firmly.

Hugging the warrior, Hecuba bent to her ear. "Bring her home soon, won't you?"

Xena smiled and nodded.

Herodotus stepped forward and took Gabrielle into his arms, holding her a long moment before reluctantly releasing her. "Have a safe journey, now."

"We will, Dad."

Waving, the two women headed down the path.

Hecuba and Herodotus stood arm-in-arm, sadly watching their daughter go. Finally, with heavy sighs, they turned and began walking back toward the house.

"I never knew her to miss an opportunity for strawberries," Herodotus declared. "Must be love."

Looking over her shoulder, Hecuba smiled as she watched Xena take the bard's hand and turn toward the trail leading to the berry patch. "Yeah, I think you're right."

Herodotus glanced at his wife affectionately. "Guess it's just you and me now."

Reaching for her husband's hand, Hecuba pulled him close and sighed contentedly. "Yeah, just like in the beginning."

*****

The bard stared off into the distance as she walked along, an almost dreamy expression on her face.

"Gabrielle?"

Snapping out of her haze, she turned to the warrior. "Did you say something?"

"Yeah, where were you?"

"I was just thinking about the past few days." She looked up playfully. "The sex scene I could write now…wow!"

"I see," the warrior smiled playfully. "I guess that means that you've overcome your block."

"Mm-hmm. The answer was in my dreams all along. Turns out I just needed the right teacher."

"So all this time, I was just a fling? Someone you used for research?"

"This may be hard for you to believe," the bard winked, "but beyond the educational aspect, I kinda have a thing for you."

"Mmm, true poetry," Xena teased.

The bard laughed and shook her head. "Okay...let me rephrase that."

"Don't bother. I think you expressed yourself perfectly last night."

"Really?"

"Oh yeah."

"So, I've captured your heart then?" Gabrielle questioned.

"Absolutely."

"Well, I guess that's a good thing for me, considering every blonde in Amphipolis is lusting after you."

Xena winced.

"So, tell me," the bard asked. "Should I be jealous?"

Stopping, Xena turned to face her. "You know, I was wondering the same thing."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I never did hear…just how is it that your breeches ended up outside the tavern."

"Oh that. It was all very innocent."

"Innocent like our 'quick' kiss in your bedroom?"

"I promise…Ryder and I didn't do any kissing outside the--" She paused, remembering the evening she'd first met Ryder. "Well, at least not that night."

"There was kissing other nights?"

Gabrielle glanced away shyly.

"With Ryder?"

"Just once. I think I was attracted to the rebel in him. He kind of reminded me of you."

"A rebel, huh?"

"Um-hmm."

"Lucky for me you like bad girls."

"Lucky for both of us, I think."

Xena smiled. "So, about this kiss with Ryder. How was it?"

"Not bad actually."

"'Not bad'! What does that mean?"

"Just what I said. Not bad."

"On a scale of 1 to 10?"

The bard pressed her finger to her lips thoughtfully.

"Well?" Xena asked anxiously.

"I don't know…maybe a 9 or 10."

"A 10!" the warrior exclaimed.

Gabrielle shrugged casually.

"What about me?" Xena questioned. "How would you rate my kisses?"

"On a scale of 1 to 10?"

"Yes," the warrior replied impatiently, "same scale."

"Well…I don’t know."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

"It's just that your kisses are way off the normal scale," Gabrielle grinned.

Relaxing, the warrior smiled. "How far off?"

"I'd have to give you at least a 100."

Quickly doing the math, Xena spoke up. "Converting that to a scale of 1 to 10, would give Ryder a 1," she offered, a little too happily.

"Yeah, I guess so," the bard admitted. "He's such a good guy, though, I feel kind of bad for giving him such a low score."

Smiling, the warrior placed her hands on Gabrielle's hips. "Well, in his defense…it really takes two to make an exceptional kiss."

"I think that you might be right," the bard agreed.

"Well my little researcher, care to experiment?"

"I was hoping you would ask."

Lightly clasping Gabrielle's face in her hands, the warrior kissed her tenderly then slowly pulled back.

The genuine affection in Xena's eyes amazed her. Even after everything they'd been through, it was still hard for her to believe that the warrior could actually love her this much. "I wish…." Embarrassed that she'd absently spoken her thoughts, she stopped.

"What do you wish?" Xena asked, taking the bard's hand.

Gabrielle's cheeks flushed. "I…I wish that my kiss would make you want no one but me."

Inhaling deeply, Xena looked into her partner's eyes. "It's too late. Your smile already did that the very first time I saw you."

*****

It was dark by the time they arrived in Amphipolis.

As they approached the tavern, Xena immediately sensed that something was up. The place was absolutely buzzing with activity.

Opening the door, they peered inside. It was packed, every table full, but not with the tavern's usual rowdy clientele. Instead, it was crowded with couples, conversing softly at candle lit tables as they awaited dinner. It was as if they'd walked into a different establishment.

The bard turned to Xena in confusion.

Seeing her daughter and Gabrielle from across the room, Cyrene hurried over and embraced the bard fondly. "You'll never know how glad I am to see you."

Surprised by Cyrene's affectionate greeting, Gabrielle smiled. "It's good to see you too."

"Mom, what's going on here?" Xena asked.

"I thought you could tell us," Toris replied. "We assumed that you must have convinced the witch to help."

Cyrene nodded. "It’s been absolutely crazy here. Seems the men have suddenly become rather romantic. These candlelight dinners have become very popular."

Perplexed, the warrior shook her head.

"Never mind about that," Cyrene exclaimed. "You two must be famished. I can set a place for you in the kitchen if you like."

"How's that sound to you, Gabrielle?" Turning to her, Xena saw her young lover look up at the roof and immediately heard the faint sound of falling rain.

Gabrielle met her eyes and smiled.

"So girls, what can I get you?" Cyrene asked.

Xena cleared her throat, her eyes never leaving the bard. "I…uh…thanks but I think we'll eat later." Entwining her fingers through the bard's, she led her toward the door.

Hurrying back to take care of customers, Cyrene heard the clap of thunder and turned to Toris. "Close the front the shutters, will you?"

The tall young man quickly disappeared to do as his mother asked.

Moments later, he returned.

"Mom, you aren't going to believe this, but she's standing out there in the rain again."

Cyrene walked to the window and peered out. There, in front of the inn, stood Xena, holding Gabrielle's hand as the rain poured down around them. Even through the streaked glass, she could see the joyful expression on her daughter's face.

"What is it with her, anyway?" Toris questioned. "Doesn't she know enough to come in out of the weather?"

As Cyrene watched Xena bend to kiss the bard, she sighed happily and closed the shutters. "Maybe she just likes the rain."

"I think she's nuts." He shook his head in disbelief, then shrugged. "Well, maybe now that Gabrielle's here, she'll be able to talk some sense into her."

Smiling broadly, Cyrene took her son's arm and guided him back into the room, "Toris…I think she already has."
