A Change of Perspective

by Rosemary

Xena was tired. Tired of the leers cast her way from the men, tired of this dirty smelly town, but above all she was tired of waiting for Gabrielle. She shifted slightly to realign the scabbard on her back, and forced herself to relax. 'What in the Gods name could those two be doing?' Xena thought, then winced inwardly. 'Check that I don't want to know.' By the time Gabrielle finally turned up her mood easily matched the growing darkness. "I'm sorry I'm so late Xena. We sort of got to talking." The bard said as she reached out to touch her friends arm. Xena's answering shrug deftly avoided the intruding hand. She kept her face averted. "We have to find a place to make camp Gabrielle, I don't want to spend another night here." Xena pulled Argo's reigns in the direction of the gates and had gone several feet, before she realized Gabrielle was not beside her.

With an exasperated sigh she turned back to the bard, only to find Gabrielle looking at her, an appraising expression on her lovely face. "What?" Xena asked, uncomfortable under the scrutiny. Gabrielle shook her head and joined the warrior. They left the town without another look. After a few hours they made camp. Both were too exhausted for food, and Gabrielle quickly fell asleep. As weary as Xena was she lay awake a long time watching the bard and thinking about the last few days, the town, and a woman named Lara.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Xena?" The bard asked. "Yes?" The warrior answered wearily. "How are we going to know who this person is?" Xena swallowed a harsh response. The bard had asked the same question in different ways for the last several miles. "I mean it could be a trap or something." Xena sighed heavily. "Gabrielle you know as much as I do. We supposed meet someone at a tavern called Warriors Blood. If it is a trap," Xena smiled coolly. "I think I can handle it." Gabrielle shuddered. "Warriors Blood. What a horrible name for a place to eat." Xena grinned. "Not as bad as The Headless Bard." Gabrielle paled as Xena laughed. "Funny, very funny." She muttered.
They arrived at the tavern by dusk. The place already teeming with people, many of the women were dressed in less than nothing, and Xena noticed quite a few transactions being made between the tavern owner and some of the men. She soon realized what kind of tavern this was and reached for Gabrielle to pull her close. The bard had other ideas and was already making her way to the tavern owner. "Excuse me sir" She said politely. The man looked her up and down eyes lingered on her breasts and firm stomach. "Yeah." Gabrielle smiled her best smile and smoothed her hair. "I was wondering if you hired entertainment for your fine establishment." Xena had reached her side and whispered urgently to her. "Gabrielle its not that kind of tavern." The bard turned her gaze to her friend. "I know what kind of tavern this is Xena." Her voice was firm, and held something in it that Xena had never heard before....experience.
The warrior watched as conflicting emotions played across Gabrielle's face. With a small smile she returned her attention to the tavern owner. "I'm a bard, and I thought I could perform for your guests." Xena saw a raw look cross the mans face. Her eyes hardened, but she would let Gabrielle continue....for now. "The only performance these guests want doesn't involve," He leered. "Talking." His eyes strayed over to the young woman's tall companion. "Now if you and your friend want to perform together, I know that would get a lot of interest." Xena's face flushed from rage, and something more, as the image flashed in her mind. Gabrielle however remained calm. "Thank you, but no. Two ales please." The man swore under his breath and quickly poured two ales, it was not the angry scowl of the warrior that prompted his haste, but rather the implacable gaze of the young woman who seemed mature beyond her years.
They found an empty table in the back perfectly positioned so that Xena could watch the door and the surrounding crowd. "Gabrielle, is there something you..." Xena struggled for the right words. "Something that you haven't told me about yourself?" She finished lamely. Gabrielle remained still her voice hollow. "Xena there's a lot about me you don't know." Xena felt sick, after all they had been through, and all they had shared, secrets were the last thing she thought the bard would keep from her. She covered her hurt with a healthy swallow of ale. 'I have my own secrets.' She castigated herself. Xena settled back against her chair. Silence, an unusual commodity with the bard, settled over the table.
They waited in growing unease. The tavern doors opened frequently letting in more men eager for an evenings enjoyment. Xena caught herself glancing at Gabrielle more often than not. The bards eyes were sheltered to her gaze. Finally Xena stood and stretched. "It's late, we'll try again tomorrow." She gently pulled Gabrielle to her feet. Xena suppressed a shudder as she felt the small hands encircle her waist. Gabrielle rested her head on the tall warrior's shoulder. Xena breathed in the fresh scent of her hair. "Tired?" She whispered into the soft reddish gold mane. Gabrielle snuggled closer and nodded..
Xena went back to the tavern owner who seemed more than satisfied with the nights receipts. "Do you have a room?" She asked. "No rooms to let, but if...." Xena gripped his collar tightly in one hand. "Perhaps you misunderstood the question. Do you have a room to sleep in?" His answer was constricted by her grip but he quickly handed her a key and pointed to the back. Xena released him and he slumped against the counter. "Where?" He rubbed his neck. "First room to the right." He gasped. She tossed two dinars at the man and headed for the room.
It was the filthiest room Xena had ever been in. The bed was unmade and the sheets didn't appear as if they had been washed in ages. If Gabrielle hadn't been so tired they would have left and made camp in the surrounding woods. "I definitely overpaid for the room." The bard nodded tiredly and struggled to undress. "Here let me help." Strong hands untied the cloth that concealed the young womans upper body. Gabrielle trembled when callused hands dropped to her waist freeing her skirt from her hips. The bard shivered as cold air brushed across her nude body. "Get into bed." Xena's voice held a rough edge. Xena undressed and joined her under the blankets, her heart hammering at the new sensations touching the woman had awakened.
The morning sun drifted through the grimy haze of the window. As usual Xena woke up first, a heavy weight on her chest and shoulder. Opening her eyes she saw that Gabrielle's head and arm were halfway across her body. Her soft hair a blanket of silk on her breasts. Xena wanted to feel the texture with her fingers. Desire overrode fear as she reached down to stroke the delicate strands. Gabrielle murmured in her sleep and tightened her hold on the warrior. Xena gasped at the feeling of the younger womans body pressed so close. She remained still for several moments listening to her deep even breaths. Xena's heartbeat accelerated, she wanted to explore more, touch the bard in ways she had only touched herself. She had never felt a woman next to her like this. The tantalizing scent of her, the liquid softness of bare skin against her own. Desire ebbed and flowed like a tide. Her senses alive she felt the light touch of Gabrielle's fingertips on her ribs and the weight of her arm across her breasts. Her nipples tightened as Gabrielle shifted, the bend of her elbow brushing against them.
Xena closed her eyes against growing needs of her body. She needed to get up......now. Gabrielle's fingers traced her ribs and a hard shudder coursed through her lean frame. Xena opened her eyes and found herself lost in Gabrielle's green gaze. "I have to go." She muttered. Gabrielle smiled gently. "Right now?" Her fingers trailed up from the warriors ribs to the underside of her breasts. Xena swallowed. "Argo..I need to check on Argo." Gabrielle moved her hand up further and placed it in the valley of Xena's breasts. "I'm sure she is fine." Xena sat up dislodging the bards hand. She ran her fingers though her long sable hair. "I've never done this...." She waved her hand. "With a woman." Gabrielle quickly concealed her surprise and delight.
"Would it shock you do know I had?" Gabrielle asked quietly. Xena did not trust herself to answer. She rose from the bed and dressed. "I have to check on Argo." Her expression unreadable. "Get dressed and meet me outside. We'll get something to eat." Xena left without another glance. Gabrielle dropped back against the pillows. Instead of being upset a slow smile came to her lips. She knew that Xena had begun to respond to her touch, and had wanted her almost as much as she wanted the warrior. 'Xena may have many skills,' She thought. 'But I'm willing to bet I have a few that will surprise her.'
Xena strode through the tavern. Frustration in every step, she needed release and now. A darkly handsome man leaned next to the door watching her approach with thinly disguised interest. "Has anyone told you that your beautiful?" He asked as she drew near. Xena contemplated the man. "Has anyone ever told you that you talk too much?" She pulled him into an embrace her lips crushing against his. She felt his hard body through her leathers, she felt his tongue pushing for entrance into her mouth......... she felt nothing. No hunger, no passion. The realization stunned her. Xena shoved him away from her and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. He made to reach for her again. "Touch me and I will make you sorry you were every born." Her voice a low throaty growl. She left him standing with a confused look on his face and headed for the stables to saddle Argo.
Xena had enjoyed riding Argo from the day she bought her. The horse seemed to know her mistress, as well as the mistress knew her horse. Argo easily responded to even the slightest change in pressure on her flanks. Horse and rider ran through the woods and over empty fields. The horse's thundering hooves echoed off the trees. Xena leaned forward in the saddle ebony hair flying in the wind, a fierce smile on her face. She eventually slowed Argo to a stop. Xena dismounted and loosened Argo's reigns. Xena collapsed onto her back, eyes gazing into the cloudless sky. Of all the concerns and worries of their daily lives, never had it occurred to her that Gabrielle would want her. She knew the young woman admired, perhaps even worshipped her, but wanted her, no that was something completely unexpected.
She rolled over onto to her stomach, hands propping up her head. Xena had kissed that man in the tavern and felt nothing, but the mere thought of Gabrielle's hands on her body made her shiver with desire. She had never touched a woman with passion before, never wanted to. Until now. Xena licked her lips picturing Gabrielle's soft mouth on hers, she touched them with trembling fingers wanting them to be the bards. She closed her eyes and laid her face against the warming grass, imagining it to be Gabrielle's firm thighs, the tickling leaves, her downy hair. Unconsciously her hips lifted and her thighs tightened together causing a rush of sensation between her legs. Her breathing was becoming sporadic as she undulated her hips. Xena slid her hand down the length of her body her fingers desperately seeking fevered flesh. She parted herself and slipped inside stroking hard against her firm bud, her hips bucked with the friction and she buried her face into the fragrant grass. Xena whimpered as a wave of release flowed through her. She settled onto the ground and dried her slick fingers on the grass, but even after the satisfaction of her release, a slow hunger burned in her belly.
Xena climbed aboard Argo her sensitive flesh tingled against the rough leather of the saddle. She rode rapidly back to town, back to Gabrielle. The bard waited patiently by the tavern idly watching the townspeople. She knew Xena was approaching before she saw the warrior, the familiar tingle in her soul told her she was near. Gabrielle turned and took in the vision of her friend riding hard, head thrown back, she was wild and untamed and she was hers. Xena drew back the reigns and came to a halt directly in front of the bard. "I went for a ride." Was all the explanation she offered. Gabrielle's smile broadened when the warrior reached down and pulled her into the saddle with her. Gabrielle wrapped her arms around Xena's waist and breathed into her ear. "Hungry?" Xena shuddered. Gabrielle tightened her grip and leaned against Xena. She was about to pull Argo into a trot when a soft voice called. "Are you Xena?" She turned in the saddle and saw one of the most beautiful women she had ever seen. "Yes." Was all she could muster. "I think you've been waiting for me. I'm Lara." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2
Xena dismounted Argo easily leaving Gabrielle to struggle off the tall horse. "Warrior Princess, the title certainly fits." The woman smiled. "You have the carriage and beauty of a princess and the unfettered strength of a warrior." Her voice was warm, seductive. Gabrielle stepped between the women "I'm Gabrielle, her friend." The bard paused and looked at the two women, she read the interest in Lara's gaze. "Her very, very good friend." She added. Lara nodded to Gabrielle and spread her hands in surrender. "Of course. I should have known that she is yours." Xena bristled at the implication. Gabrielle touched the warrior's hand. "I'm glad we understand each other." She smiled almost as coldly as her warrior. "You wouldn't want to make me mad now would you?" Lara chuckled at the display of ownership in the bard. "Oh no, little one you have nothing to worry about from me."
Gabrielle was content with her exhibition of possession, Xena however was less than pleased and stalked off to the tavern. Gabrielle followed with Lara by her side. "So the warrior is tamed by a bard." Gabrielle grimaced. "Not yet." Lara remained silent as they joined Xena at a deserted table. "Shall I get us something to drink?" Lara asked. Xena shrugged at the same time Gabrielle agreed. Lara turned on her heel and headed to the bar. "I..am..not..yours." Xena said, between gritted teeth. Gabrielle reached out to stroke the warriors strong shoulders, her fingers a hairs breadth away. "Xena think about how you feel when men approach me." The bard lowered her voice to a soft whisper. "How you want to protect me from them." Xena nodded her head in understanding. "It's the same with women." Gabrielle let her fingers trail across Xena's skin. "I am not experienced with men," She leaned closer her breath a warm breeze against Xena's ear. "And you are not with women." The bard gently stroked Xena's upper arm. "You may not be able to teach me the way it is with men," She grinned. "But rest, assured I am more than able to show the way it is with women."
Lara returned to the them followed closely by a serving girl carrying a small tray. The girl set the mugs down and scurried away as if afraid to stay at the tension laden table. Lara picked up her cup and took a long swallow, allowing a dribble of ale to run down her chin. Xena's eyes followed the trail of wetness as it eased from her chin to the swelling of her breasts. Gabrielle cleared her throat loudly, and took a healthy drink from her own cup. Lara fluttered impossibly long lashes over cobalt blue eyes. "Xena do you remember Treece?" Xena started at the name, and her eyes narrowed. "I knew of a warlord named Treece he was a butcher, a lying, cruel, wanton killer." Lara's smile grew to become as cold as the dawn. "He was my father." Xena stood and grabbed Gabrielle firmly by the arm. "We're leaving." Her voice low. Lara motioned to her side ten men quickly surrounded the couple. "Not yet we have many things yet to talk about."
Xena's grin never touched her eyes. "If you know of me at all, you know ten men would barely make me sweat." She drew her sword and leveled it to Lara's delicate neck. "I know you warrior," She leaned forward, pressing the sword into her own throat, eyes rising to meet bluer one. "Better than your little companion, perhaps better than yourself." She dipped her head in the direction of her men. They tightened around Gabrielle and Xena. "What is you want then Lara?.... Revenge?" Xena asked her eyebrow arched, a contemptuous sneer on her lips. "Maybe my death?" She pulled Gabrielle behind her. "You'll just have to wait in line." With a bloodcurdling yell she hurled herself at the men surrounding her. A blinding fast kick sent two men sprawling. Her sword sang through the air deflecting blows that would have felled a lesser warrior. Xena pushed the men back until there was room to maneuver. With swift strokes she whittled the fighters down to three.
Her eyes glittered with an almost tangible energy. Her grin spread wide across her lovely face. The men were drew back, trying to pace the warrior. Xena approached close, the tip of her sword tasting the air between the men and herself. The men regained themselves and began to press forward and she did the last thing anyone in the tavern would have expected. Xena dropped her sword to the ground. The men stood dumbfounded for a split second...it was all she needed. With a powerful somersault she flipped over the remaining warriors. Her leg lashed out once, twice, three times throwing the men groaning to the hard floor. Xena casually flipped the sword into her hand with toe of her boot. She crossed the distance between herself and Lara in a heartbeat.
"Either get better men," She said, her voice flat. "Or get an army." She pulled Gabrielle close to her. The sword pointed to Lara's throat never flinched. Lara remained seated. "Oh did I forget to mention I have a sister?" Xena's head turned towards the open door. Callisto strode through it. Her eyes glowed with an unholy light. "Hello Xena. Did you miss me?" Xena kept a tight hold on Gabrielle's arm. "Hardly." She muttered. "Well half sister Xena, my father was not the most monogamous of sorts." Lara rose to stand next to Callisto. "It took us a long time to find each other. After we did we discovered we had one thing in common. Our deep and abiding hatred for you." Lara wrapped her arm around Callisto's waist. "Of course she is quite mad. Shame really, someone so attractive to be driven to such insanity." Callisto smiled as if it were a compliment.
Xena edged towards the door, Gabrielle still behind her. "What ever it is you want," She gazed at both women. "You won't get it today." She led Gabrielle from the tavern into the dirty road. Lara and Callisto followed. Xena whistled for Argo, who promptly trotted to the warrior. "One other thing Xena," Lara purred. "You should really be more careful with what you little friend drinks." Callisto burst into laughter. Xena stalked to Lara gripping her collar tight in her hands. "What are you talking about?" Lara swallowed hard against the grip. "Poison" She managed to get out. Xena flung Lara away and sent her crashing to the dirt. Xena turned wide eyed to Gabrielle. She picked Lara up easily as if a speck of sand."What poison?" Xena's eyes burned blue fire. Lara laughed with her sister. "That's for me to know and you to find out." Xena released her. "What do you want?" Lara and Callisto exchanged furtive glances. "A little death perhaps. Your death, her death it doesn't really matter."
"Fine my death then." Xena dropped her sword. "Give Gabrielle the antidote, and you may have my life." Lara grinned cruelly. "To easy, much to easy. She lives you die. Where is the suffering, the loss, the pain." Lara paced around the women. "She has three days before the poison kills her. You have three days to atone for your sins. You do it correctly and she lives. Fail," She shrugged. "You both die. But remember my powerful, beautiful warrior, whatever happens, you will be dead." Xena leaned into the woman pressing her almost backward from her stance. "Cynic." She said gravely. Xena led Gabrielle to Argo and gently lifted her into the saddle. After joining the bard she turned to the two women. "If she dies," She pointed to each of them. "You die. I have begun to atone for my sins, you may want to think about your own." Xena quickly sent Argo into a trot. Gabrielle leaned back against Xena's shoulder. "See I told you it was a trap."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3

Xena urged Argo on, running at a break neck pace through the small town. They entered the woods and she drew Argo to a quick stop. Xena dismounted the horse but when Gabrielle attempted to join her, the warrior placed a warning hand on her leg. "Don't move." The tone in her voice was enough for Gabrielle to remain astride the horse. Xena paced around the small wooded area looking closely at the ground and weeds. She bent to pick at a few, her brow furrowed in concentration. Xena lighted on a small bush and after several long moments of examination seemed satisfied, and pulled a few of the smaller leaves free.

She returned to Gabrielle and with little effort lifted her from the saddle to stand by her side. "Gabrielle listen to me this is very important. How much did you drink?" The bard moved to start pacing, when the warrior gripped her arms tightly. "Don't walk, don't move just answer the question." Gabrielle winced at the pressure of Xena's hands. "Your hurting me Xena." She eased her hold slightly. "I'm sorry. It's just very important that you remain still as much as possible." The bard shrugged her delicate shoulders. "Why I feel fine." Xena resisted an urge to scream. "Gabrielle, poison goes through your system faster the more you move." Gabrielle's eyes widened. "Oh.." She said softly. "Oh.." Xena repeated.

"Now how much did you drink?" Gabrielle thought for a moment. "Not much at all really, just a mouthful." Relief flooded Xena's face. "Good. Now can you make yourself sick?" Gabrielle paled. "Sick?" She asked. "Gabrielle, this is no time for embarrassment, can you do it?" Gabrielle nodded. "Not in front of you though." Xena sighed. "Fine where then?" The bard pointed to a strand of trees farther away and had started to walk towards them when Xena picked her up in her arms, and carried her. "No moving remember?" Gabrielle took the opportunity to wrap her arms around the warriors neck. "I've always dreamt of you sweeping me off my feet, but not quite like this." Xena cast an irritated glance to her friend.

They arrived by the set of trees Gabrielle had pointed to, Xena carefully set her down and remained close. "I can't do it with you standing here." She said glumly. "All right," Xena walked away a few feet. "Call when your done." Gabrielle continued to stare after her until the warrior finally turned her back. After several minutes Gabrielle straightened, her face paler than before. Xena was by her side before she could move an inch. She lifted the small woman into her arms and strode back to the horse.

Xena lifted Gabrielle back into the saddle, and climbed up behind her. She pulled Gabrielle against her to rest and rode further into the woods. She found a large hollowed out boulder that created a small cave. Leaving Gabrielle still safely aboard Argo she methodically went about setting up camp. Xena piled blankets around the large burning fire and set a pot of water over it to heat. She lifted Gabrielle again and laid her upon the blankets. "Stay still. I'll be right back." She melted into the woods the shadowy shafts of sunlight reflecting through the trees. Gabrielle settled down into the comforting warmth of the blankets and closed her eyes. 'I really feel fine,' She thought. 'Except for the sour taste in my mouth that is.' She grimaced as she swallowed.

A hand was immediately upon her cheek. "What's wrong." Xena's warm voice asked. Gabrielle opened her eyes. She did not even hear the warrior approach. "Nothing I just need a drink of water." Xena fetched the waterskin and held Gabrielle's head as she drank. "Better?" She questioned. Gabrielle nodded and lay back against the bedding. She fingered the heavy blankets. "Aren't a few of these yours?" Xena nodded slightly. "What are you going to sleep with?" Gabrielle blushed as the words left her mouth. Xena's lips twitched. "Don't worry about me." Xena said chuckling.

Xena reached for the leaves she had taken early and placed them in the simmering pot. "What's that?" Gabrielle asked. "It's some healing herbs, if there is poison left in your system after you hmmm...," She paused, searching for more delicate words. "Relieved myself of the bulk of it?" Gabrielle offered. Xena smiled ruefully. "It should help to neutralize the rest." Xena stirred the leaves into the boiling water. "I don't think Lara noticed how little you drank." Xena crossed her legs as she sat in the dirt, and balanced her elbows on her knees. "That's good, very good." She muttered.

Gabrielle never tired of watching the warrior the animal grace with which she moved, her beautiful face, she had dreamed of loving this woman for so long it was a steady ache on her skin. Gabrielle drifted into a daydream as she gazed at Xena. The two of them alone, her hands carefully undressing the warrior like a child unwrapping a long awaited gift. Lowering the leather straps on her strong shoulders, her lips tracing along the revealed skin. She would be oh so gentle with her. Gabrielle's fingers soothing tentative flesh, her mouth seductive on Xena's. A small moan escaped her parted lips. Xena was at her side in an instant feeling her forehead for any sign of fever. "Do you feel warm?" Xena asked. Gabrielle flushed, and shook her head.

Xena took Gabrielle's chin in her hand and lifted her face to met her eyes. Xena may have had no experience with women but the look of desire was the same for both genders, and it was a clear as a spring pond in the bards eyes. Xena released Gabrielle's face and retreated back to the fire. She hung her head down, dark hair cascading around her shoulders and face. Gabrielle tried to think of something to say to break the unbearable silence. Xena spoke first. "I wouldn't know what to do." She whispered. A bolt of excitement raced through Gabrielle. "I could show you," Her voice equally hushed. "How to touch, how to make love to a woman if you will let me." Xena was silent for a long time her head bowed. Gabrielle began to fear she had lost the warrior.

And then Xena stood, all the power, the grace, the absolute majesty of the woman cloaked her like a robe. She went to Gabrielle's side and knelt, her fingers shook slightly as they grazed across soft lips. "Teach me." She said simply. Gabrielle trembled with passion. As in her daydream she lowered the leather straps down and placed gentle kisses across strong shoulders. "It can be soft and tender." She spoke into warm flesh. She pulled the straps lower exposing more of Xena's firm breasts. "It can hard and fast." She bit lightly into Xena's throat flicking her tongue on the pulse that beat there. The warrior gasped and threw her head back revealing more of her throat.

Gabrielle kissed lower her mouth inches above swelling of the warriors breasts. "More?" She asked. Xena struggled to breath and nodded. Gabrielle pulled the leather dress lower until it pulled free of Xena's breasts and fell to her waist. The warrior's nipples tightened immediately in the air and Gabrielle willed herself to go slow. She lowered her mouth until her lips could caress the firm coral tips. She snaked her tongue out and stroked each tip for a moment. Xena moaned and arched her back seeking a firmer touch on her aching nipples. Gabrielle smiled and brushed her fingers on Xena's ribs, her hands circled to caress her strong back. She bent her head again actively sucking at the enlarged nipples. Xena whimpered low in her throat, her hands fluttered around Gabrielle's head before finally settling into her red gold hair. Gabrielle teased and licked until she could feel the heat rise from Xena's center.

She raised her mouth feathering light kisses up her collarbone and neck. She took the warriors head in her hands and swam in the liquid blue of her eyes. Without another thought Gabrielle kissed her. The bards tongue easily parted pliant lips touching and finally tangling with Xena's. They kissed for

seconds or hours both lost in the feelings of the other. Xena broke the kiss first, her needs becoming more urgent. She pushed Gabrielle's mouth back to her breasts, and twisted pulling the younger woman to lay on her. Gabrielle braced her weight with her hands as she tongued taut nipples. Xena sighed, her hips rocking with need. Gabrielle rolled over to her side running her fingers down Xena's body watching as muscles jumped and twitched in their wake. She caressed her thighs delighted that they spread so willingly. Xena's leather dress was gathered up around her hips as Gabrielle pulled away the last of the garments hindering her seeking fingers.

"I want..." Xena groaned. "Anything, you can have anything." Gabrielle urged. "Ask for anything." Gabrielle kissed the underside of her breasts breathing in the leather musk scent of the warrior. Xena struggled to control the waves crashing through her. "I..want. ..you...inside.." She gasped as Gabrielle complied slipping two fingers deep into the warrior, her thumb strumming on Xena's swollen bud. Xena closed her eyes tight against overwhelming sensations. The softness of it, the tenderness. 'So unlike men.' She wondered. The bard kept a steady rhythm drawing her fingers out only to plunge them again deeper and firmer. Gabrielle felt she could go on forever. Xena bucked her powerful hips so close now, she could feel it building low in her belly. "Faster....higher...oh gods...yes." Gabrielle bit at her nipples as Xena convulsed around her fingers. She gripped the bard tightly to her breasts, gasping for breath as the contractions slowed, and then stopped.

Gabrielle slowly withdrew her fingers creating a new series of shudders to claim the warrior, her wet fingers trailed up and coated a still erect nipple. She bent her head to taste the wetness tongue licking up every trace of the salty moisture. Gabrielle's smile was luscious. "There is still much more to learn my warrior." Gabrielle brushed Xena's hair from her face, and gently kissed her cheek. She pulled the blankets around and them and rested in the embrace of Xena's arms. "I hope your a patient teacher Gabrielle, we may need to go over some things more than once." Gabrielle patted her bare shoulder. "Have no fear Xena, I was the best instructor in my group." Xena arched her brow, but was too spent to respond. They fell into dreamless sleep.

The pain hit Gabrielle well past midnight. Her stomach was a writhing tangle of agony. She swallowed trying to ease the burning in her throat. Her muscles contorted, spasms running the length of her small frame. Xena held her close, smoothing the tight muscles with her hands. "Relax Gabrielle. Listen to my voice...breath." Xena's rich alto floated through her misery. She felt a slight pressure on her neck and her body became fluid. Pain eased than stopped entirely. "I just numbed your nerve endings. You won't feel anything."

Xena lay Gabrielle out full length and massaged her body. She rubbed the bunched muscles in her thighs and calves and worked up onto the expanse of her shoulders and back. She felt the tension loosen and then surrender. Xena gently rolled Gabrielle over onto her back, and began the process again. She leaned back on her heels. "Better?" Gabrielle nodded heavy lidded. Xena dipped a cup into the pot, bringing the still warm fluid to Gabrielle's mouth. "Drink this, but be careful it's bitter." Gabrielle sipped at the cup gagging as the liquid hit her throat. Xena pulled the cup away setting it close by. Xena looked deep into Gabrielle's green eyes. "I'm going to release you now." Xena placed impossibly gentle hands at her neck and twisted. A throbbing pain hit her so hard she gasped and leaned against Xena for support. "Easy, easy." The warrior whispered. Xena lay down pulling the bard into her embrace, blankets warm around them. "Sleep now, you'll feel better in the morning." Xena who never prayed to the God's, fervently prayed now. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4

By mid-morning Gabrielle was firmly in the grip of a burning fever, her entire body bathed in an unending sweat. Xena wiped her flushed face with a cool cloth and watched as Gabrielle's eyes fluttered open. "Xena..." She croaked, her mouth and throat dry as dust. "Hush, don't talk. Save your strength." Xena rested her hand on her forehead. "I guess I should have stayed still." She choked out, a smile briefly crossing her lips. Xena stroked her face pulling the damp strands of hair back. "I should have known better. I should have...." Her voice caught. Gabrielle reached for her hand and gripped it. "Stop," She said her voice surprisingly strong. "It's not your fault. If you want to blame someone, blame Lara and Callisto." Gabrielle lay her head back against Xena's leg as her eyes slid shut. The short outburst had exhausted her.

Xena lifted Gabrielle's head and brought the cup to her lips pouring more of the bitter liquid into her mouth. Most of the fluid trickled out of her mouth and down her chin Xena gently wiped it away with her fingers. She stretched out and pulled Gabrielle down her arms wrapped tightly around the bard. They stayed like that the remainder of the day. At early evening Xena grew more concerned for the bard, her breathing had become increasingly labored, and she had not uttered a sound since the morning. Gabrielle stirred restlessly pushing the blankets off her overheated body. Xena pulled the blankets back up to her chin, and placed another cool cloth on her forehead. There was little she could do but wait and hope the fever broke soon. She couldn't go after the antidote, that would leave Gabrielle totally unprotected. Xena was trapped into ineffectualness and she did not like it, not at all.

Callisto watched all this with growing pleasure. 'Warrior princess,' She thought disdainfully, 'To fall for a simple trap and then to drop your guard and allow yourself to be so easily spied upon.' She shook her head in contempt as she stood and headed for her horse. Lara, now Lara was the bigger problem. It was sheer genius to convince her that they were long lost sisters, and so much fun to lead her to believe that this plan of revenge was her own. 'Fool, an utter fool, I'll probably have to kill her soon.' She thought with a shrug. Callisto dug her heels hard into the horses flanks and turned toward their own camp.

Xena raised her head at the sound of a horse. She knew that they would follow them and no doubt keep track of Gabrielle's decline. She looked at the bard, her lovely face contorted in agony from the ceaseless pain. Xena clenched her teeth, and swallowed rapidly to keep from screaming out. 'If she had stayed home she wouldn't be dying here in the dirt,' Her thoughts raged. 'She would be married now, perhaps even have children. She would be safe.' Xena drew her knees up and rested her head in her arms. Her eyes lingered on Gabrielle as she fought for breath.

Callisto continued on to her own camp she could see Lara pacing even from this distance. For some reason the sight irritated her, and she almost turned the horse around to avoid the upcoming conversation. "Is she dying?" Lara asked as soon as Callisto was within ear shot. Callisto waited until she had dismounted and tossed the reigns to one of her men before she answered. "Yes, dear sister. She is dying." She strode to her tent, Lara following closely at her heels. "What of Xena? Does she remain at her side?" Callisto poured herself a wine ignoring Lara for a moment as she savored the fruity taste. "Xena is still with her, caring for her. I don't think she will leave until she is dead." Lara smiled at the news and poured her own wine. "So my plan has worked to perfection." She said, drinking her wine. Callisto grimaced at her tone, but said nothing. "Revenge is sweet sister. When the annoying girl dies, Xena will be destroyed. Another death on her head this time her best friend, and all because of her past. She'll be as insane then, as you are now." Lara laughed, so taken with her thoughts she didn't notice Callisto's silence or her expression of loathing.

Xena started at a noise, only to realize it was the fire. She had fallen asleep sitting up, her eyes red-rimmed from exhaustion. Gabrielle lay very still under the blankets, the fire casting flickering light on her pale face. Xena crawled forward to touch her cheek, the fever still burned unabated. Their waterskins were almost empty Xena knew she would have to leave soon if only to get more water, but she would think about that later when the need was greater. She carefully lay down next to Gabrielle pressing her length against the bard's body. Xena stroked her hair marveling anew at its softness, she listened to the her breathing and lay her head on her shoulder, wanting the physical contact and not knowing how much longer she would have it.

Lara reclined on the bed, her dark hair stark a sharp contrast to the whiteness of the pillows that surrounded her head. "Where are you going?" She asked Callisto, as she watched her put on her armor. "Out, if you want to entertain the men, do it without me." Lara grinned and raised her arms above her head. Callisto finished dressing and strapped her sword onto her back. Lara gazed at her curiosity finally getting the better of her. "Callisto why does your armor resemble the warrior princess? And the way you carry you sword is similar too." Callisto turned to the woman on the bed, her brown eyes glittered with madness. "I am nothing like Xena." She said flatly. Lara nodded quickly, fear in her voice. "Of course, you are nothing like her at all." Callisto opened the tent flap and stalked into the night, a small vial in her hand.

Gabrielle struggled for every breath now, her hair lank around her too pale face. Xena sat nearby the water was gone, there were no more cool cloths to soothe her brow. She had put out the fire long ago, the flames only reminding her of the fever the bard was dying from. "Xena." A sing song voice called from the darkness. Xena didn't stand or attempt to draw her sword she remained still, her eyes on Gabrielle. "Xena." The taunting voice called again. "What do you want Callisto?" She asked tiredly. "Maybe I came to help you?" She murmured. Xena shook her head. "Say what you came to say and leave us in peace." Callisto entered the small shelter and sat across from the warrior. "After our last encounter all I wanted to do was kill you," She nodded towards Gabrielle. "And, of course, your little friend here." She sighed and leaned back bracing her hands in the dirt. "It seems I have always hated you, from the moment I knew what hate was, it wore your beautiful face." Xena turned to watch Callisto speak, her blue eyes lifeless. Callisto stood up. Xena tensed slightly and shrugged, if she wanted to kill her so be it, without Gabrielle her life held little meaning anyway.

Callisto paced in the small area. "I still hate you, but I hate destroying you even more. What is a great villain without a great warrior to try and defeat her? Our lives, our fates are interwoven Xena." She paused reflecting on the defeated gaze of the warrior she has hated for so long. "You can't just give up without a fight. Where would the sport be in that?" She knelt in front of Xena her fingers trailed across Xena's broad shoulders and arms. Her hands rested on strong thighs as she leaned closer. "I will defeat you one day Xena, and you will beg at my feet for mercy," She stood and looked down a half smile on her face. "But it will be through battle not trickery." Callisto dropped a vial into the dirt at Xena's feet and turned to leave. "A word of warning Xena, " She said as she strode away. "Drop your sword again, and I may not be so generous." Xena resisted the urge to take the vial and rush to Gabrielle's side. "What about your sister?" She asked. Callisto mounted her horse and looked at the warrior with pain filled eyes. "What sister?" Xena listened to her insane laughter for a long time. Xena lifted Gabrielle into her arms, she twisted the lid off with her teeth and poured the contents into Gabrielle's open mouth. She stroked her throat forcing her to swallow as much as possible. Xena gently lay Gabrielle down in the blankets once more. If the liquid served only hastened her death at least it would end her suffering. Xena sat close and began to wait.

Gabrielle opened her eyes, the sun already high in the afternoon sky. Her body ached and her mouth tasted sour. She was wrapped so tightly in blankets she could barely move, her skin felt slick from sweat. She glanced around their camp finally finding Xena. The warrior was curled in sleep her sword close by her outstretched hand. Gabrielle quietly removed the blankets and stood, and immediately regretted it. A wave of dizziness crashed through her causing her to stumble into Xena's prone form. Xena was moving in a heartbeat grabbing the bard before she fell to the ground. "Gabrielle what are you doing?" Xena asked tightly. "I just wanted to..." Xena shook her head stopping further explanation. "You have been sick for the last day and a half. You should rest." Gabrielle looked at Xena, taking in the weariness on the warriors face.

"I don't think I'm the only one." She smiled gently. She allowed Xena to lay her back down on the blankets. "I guess the herbs worked." She said once Xena was satisfied with her comfort. Xena sat down running her fingers through her long hair. "No, I didn't save you. Callisto did." Gabrielle gasped in shock. "Callisto, I thought she wanted you dead?" Xena frowned. "She does Gabrielle, but in battle. She wants me to beg at her feet." Gabrielle had to smile at the thought. "You'll never have to do that, you'll beat her again." She said confidently. "Do you think you can ride in the morning?" Gabrielle nodded. "Good. We'll go back to the village its closer. You can rest there for another day or so." Gabrielle added. "A bath too?" Xena smiled. "A bath too."

With proper motivation from Xena the tavern keeper supplied them a clean room, free of charge, and a tub in the room for them to bathe in privately. Gabrielle lay immersed in warm water washing away the sweat from her body. "Someday you'll have to tell me how you arranged this." She smiled. Xena lay back on the bed wearing only her shift, she turned to Gabrielle and winked. "I must have a way with men." Gabrielle chuckled lightly. "With women too." She added. Xena sat up and crossed to where the bard was bathing. "Need help washing your back?" She asked seductively. Gabrielle shuddered at her intimate tone. Wordlessly she handed over the cloth. Xena knelt by the tub stroking the wet cloth over slim shoulders and back. She dipped the cloth into the water and trailed it over her soft hips sliding it around to graze across her ribs and stomach.

Gabrielle closed her eyes and leaned further back into the water, lifting her breasts above the surface. Xena licked Gabrielle's still exposed shoulder drinking in the wetness and flavor of her skin. Gabrielle sighed as Xena worked from her shoulder to her neck. The warrior slid the cloth across her tightened nipples, the rough fabric causing her excitement to grow. Xena left the cloth over Gabrielle's breasts rubbing in a circular motion, and listened as the bards breathing changed. "I thought you didn't know what to do?" Gabrielle gasped as Xena's hand tightened on her breast. "I'm a quick learner." She answered, turning the bards head to bestow a passionate kiss. "I think your wet enough." Xena said as she pulled the bard from the bath. She wrapped a towel around her shoulders and quickly dried Gabrielle's body.

Gabrielle lay down on the bed as Xena shrugged out of her shift. The craving that flared in those green eyes sent waves of sensation through the tall woman. Xena pulled Gabrielle on top of her, kissing her mouth and neck. "Show me how to touch you Gabrielle." She whispered. "Show me what you need." Gabrielle was breathless with desire. She kissed Xena her tongue gently parting her lips. Xena groaned at the touch of Gabrielle's tongue on her own. Her hands clutched at the bards shoulder, finally burying themselves into her wet hair. Gabrielle parted her legs and lowered herself to Xena's muscular thighs. She moved against the toned limb, leaving a trail of wetness across Xena's skin. Gabrielle raised herself up on her hands leaving her breasts free to sway with the movements of her hips. Xena lifted her head licking the hard nipples, her strong hands grasped Gabrielle's hips and slowed her frantic writhing. Gabrielle whimpered at the cessation of movement.

Xena lay back against the pillows. She dipped her fingers into her mouth and slipped them between Gabrielle's thighs. Gabrielle tossed her head back her breathing rapid. Xena guided the bard's hips with her free hand, letting the young woman set her own pace. Gabrielle tried to go slow, tried to sustain the pleasure. Tried, but failed, the rhythmic stroking of Xena's fingers inside her, and her mouth on her breasts created an uncontrollable torrent of need. She quickened her pace, thrusting hard with legs made strong from months of walking. Xena gripped the bard tightly bruising her soft skin, she pressed her leg higher hearing Gabrielle's low moan down to her soul. Her own need was tangible. She took one of Gabrielle's grasping hands and placed it between her legs, the bard slid her fingers through incredible wetness, her own urgency almost forgotten

with this new sensuous feeling. She stroked Xena hard bringing her to the same level of excitement. The obsession to climax together compelling. Xena's hips rose with the pressure of Gabrielle's fingers and then, as if long practiced in their lovemaking, they both knew it was time. Xena opened her eyes wide, losing herself in the pure green of Gabrielle's gaze just as Gabrielle was lost in Xena's blue. Their mutual stroking built to a climax that left them both surprised and shaken at its intensity.

Gabrielle lay in the comfort and strength of Xena's arms, her head nestled on her strong shoulder. "So what do you think?" She asked her hands gentle on Xena's body. The warrior remained silent for a long time. Gabrielle glanced at her almost afraid of the answer. Xena smiled down at the bard. "It'll do in a pinch." She laughed at Gabrielle's expression. "Now rest," She pulled Gabrielle's head back to her shoulder. "We're leaving tomorrow since you seem to have so much energy." Xena kissed the bard and settled to sleep.

"Gabrielle, wake up." Xena shook the bard gently. "What...why.." Gabrielle blinked her eyes. "Xena are you okay?" Xena nodded. Her white teeth biting into her lip. "What's wrong?" Gabrielle was wide awake now the concern evident on her face. "Nothing...I." Her eyes gazed at Gabrielle longingly. "I...want you..." She sighed. "I need you..." Gabrielle pulled the warrior close her breath warm across her skin. "Ask it." She whispered. Desire sparked to life like a flame. The warrior lay down on Gabrielle, her body molding easily to the bards. She leaned forward tongue tracing the smooth outline of Gabrielle's ear her breath hot. "I need to... I want to...," Every puff of breath caused a answering quiver deep in the bards center. "Yes..." Gabrielle whispered. "I need to..I want to....know what you and the tavern owner talked about." Xena said a brilliant smile of her lips.

Xena's smile faded as she watched Gabrielle's expression harden. "What is it?" She questioned. "Nothing." The bard rolled away from Xena's embrace and curled up on her side. Xena grew more apprehensive. "It was a joke Gabrielle, I was just..." Gabrielle turned to her, eyes bitter. "Kidding Xena?" She finished. Xena bit her lip, her own face becoming shadowed. "It's none of my business." She said flatly, moving away from Gabrielle. "That's right, there are things in my life that are none of your business." She said more harshly than she intended. Xena remained still for several minutes before rising and stalking off into the darkness. Gabrielle watched her leave with tear filled eyes. 'I'm so sorry Xena, there are secrets I can't even tell you.' She thought wrapping her arms tightly around waist. She cried herself to sleep.

Xena had not returned by morning, and Gabrielle kept busy with breaking up camp and loading Argo with saddlebags. 'Argo's still here,' She assured herself. 'I know she wouldn't leave her.' She ignored the niggling thought that Xena could however leave *her*. The first hour of waiting dragged by, her heart thudded with every passing second. The second hour became torture so exquisite every breath was a pain that stabbed at her soul. By the third hour she was crossing the line of madness itself. When the fourth hour had come and gone she knew in her heart that Xena was gone, that she had left her behind. Gabrielle stood up taking Argo's reigns firmly in hand. "Well girl," She said with more confidence than she felt. "Let's find our warrior." Argo nickered softly in response.

Gabrielle placed her left foot lightly into the stirrup struggled to pull herself up, when a sharp whistle echoed through the rocks. Gabrielle stumbled, but did not fall when the horse sped off. She waited patiently for the familiar sable hair and easy stride of the tall warrior. Finally she saw Xena approach the sun glinting off her bronzed armor, her hand lightly holding Argo's reigns. Gabrielle rushed forward an apology already on her lips, Xena held up a silencing hand. "No." Was all she said. Without another word she led them from the valley.

Xena remained silent the rest of the day. When they finally stopped to make camp the quiet only deepened. Gabrielle collected firewood and built a small blaze easily, while Xena moved off into the woods to hunt for dinner. When she returned Gabrielle made quick work of skinning and preparing the meat to cook. Eating became an exercise in verbal restraint for Gabrielle. With every moment she wanted to apologize to Xena for hurting her. Only to lose heart when she saw the great warrior's head bowed, her expression closed.

With dinner eaten and no conversation in the future, Gabrielle prepared for bed. She pulled off her snug tunic and folded it neatly by the fire, her skirt followed close behind. Xena's eyes watched Gabrielle's every move, her heartbeat accelerated when the skirt was removed. Standing in the soft moonlight, her creamy flesh glowed, she looked impossibly young. Xena swallowed against the lump in her throat, a muted sigh escaping her full lips. Gabrielle turned at the sound a look of hope on her face.

Xena trembled with a desire so fierce it made her ache. With a tentative hand she reached out to Gabrielle. Without pause the bard stepped closer to her hand, stopping a breath away. The warrior's fingers grazed across her taut belly, running a gentle circuit to a slim hip to finally curve around her waist and pulled her into an embrace. Xena buried her face into Gabrielle's soft skin, tears springing to her eyes. "I'm sorry Gabrielle, so sorry." She whispered into her body. Gabrielle ran her fingers through Xena's ebony hair soothing her and lowered her mouth to kiss the top of Xena's head, murmuring like apologizes into fragrant silkiness.

Xena opened her mouth against Gabrielle's firm stomach tasting her soft skin. Unbidden she lowered her mouth to brush across fine hairs, her tongue instinctively dipping into warm wetness. She groaned deep in her throat as the first taste of Gabrielle burned her mouth. Wanting more she bent further, her chin pressed against a muscled thigh. Gabrielle spread her legs wider even as they quivered from arousal. Xena's hands were strong on her hips, holding her tightly. The warrior was insatiable her mouth hungry on the bards tight opening. Everything she had ever tasted, ever known, ever dreamt, paled to what she found there. With a firm hand she pulled Gabrielle's hips closer to her mouth, her tongue pressed even deeper into the moist cleft. "Xena." Gabrielle moaned her fingers buried in Xena's hair. "I can't stay like this much...." She trailed off with the sensation of Xena's fingers slipping inside her.

The warrior tilted Gabrielle's body to the ground her mouth a constant pressure on the bards heated center. 'She's so strong,' Wondered Gabrielle. 'So beautiful.' She gasped with pleasure as Xena's fingers slid deeper, her probing tongue matching every stroke of her hand. Gabrielle tightened her thighs around Xena's head, pushing herself further onto the rapt mouth buried there. Xena responded with even more urgency, with her free she reached for Gabrielle's breasts, her fingers teasing hard nipples. "Please, please..." Gabrielle breathed. Xena paused raising her head to gaze at Gabrielle, her skin flushed, her soft hair dampened on her forehead, she was breathtaking. Gabrielle whimpered at the absence of her tongue. The warrior dipped her head, parting the moist lips again she sucked against Gabrielle's clit. She felt Gabrielle's hips rise, her fingers sliding into tightening muscles.

With firm strokes she built a fire in the bard, the feel of her flexing against her fingers, the flavor of her on her tongue drove her own hunger higher. Gabrielle was lost in passion, her eyes closed as her hands clasped Xena's head to the juncture of her thighs. Xena felt her own hips rocking, clenching her thighs as answering flutters of release swept through her. Gabrielle stilled, her body pulled tight, her fingers buried in Xena's thick hair. Then shudders claimed the bard and a low groan escaped moist lips. Xena crawled up to Gabrielle's side pulling the young woman into a tight embrace. Gabrielle's breathing slowed. "I thought I was the teacher?" Gabrielle teased. Xena chuckled quietly. "There's time enough for all the instruction you think I need."

"Xena?" Gabrielle started. "I'm sorry about earlier, about it not being your business." She finished. Xena kissed the bard on her cheek. "We all have secrets Gabrielle," She leaned back. "Including me." Gabrielle sat up in mock horror. "Secrets, you?" She gasped clutching her hands to her breasts. "That can't true. Your as transparent as the driven ......slush." Gabrielle burst into laughter at Xena's pout. She brushed fine hair away from Xena's face a

smile still on her lips. "Tell me." Xena asked, tracing the delicate outline of the young woman's face with a fingertip. Gabrielle's expression hardened but she nodded her head.

Gabrielle moved away from Xena her back against Argo's saddle. She pulled a blanket around her shoulders to ward off the chill. "I'm from Potedeia, of course you know that. I wasn't born there though. My mother gave birth to me in her home village, it was a great shame on her family. She never married my father so when I was still an infant they sold me to a young couple who thought they were unable to bear children themselves." Xena reached for Gabrielle, to hold her. Gabrielle shook her head. "Let me do this." The warrior subsided a small frown on her face. "They moved to a farming community and raised me as their own. To their surprise another daughter followed, they named her Lila. The difference between us was obvious I was fair, she dark. She looked more like our parents than I did. By the time I was ten I understood I was different, not just because I looked different, but I felt it too. I became an outcast in the only home I ever knew."

A tear rolled down her face. Xena's heart was breaking for Gabrielle, she wanted to pull her close and make the pain go away but she remained still and listened to Gabrielle's story. "I was very good at ignoring the stares and whispers from the adults. The children were harder, they were quite talented at being cruel. I was always being beaten up even by Lila. So I created my own world where no one could hurt me anymore. It was perfect, I wove stories in my head, with great hero's and beautiful princess's, where everything had a happy ending. I was never popular with the boys in the village so it was almost a relief when I reached my teens and my parents promised me in marriage. I never cared for him, so I spent even more time by myself." Gabrielle shifted slightly against the saddle and pulled her blanket tighter. She swallowed hard, a numbness washing over her. "The more time I spent alone, the more different I seemed to others. So I decided, since my fate was settled, I may as well make the best of it. I became friends with three other girls even less favored than I," She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. "We became hostages to our own suffering."

Gabrielle reached for the waterskin and took a long drink before continuing. "We made up games where we were sought after, wanted. The games were so much better than our lives Xena, we were loved and respected and no one could hurt us." Xena leaned forward placing a gentle hand on her blanketed leg. "No one will hurt you now Gabrielle." The young woman smiled at that. "That's true." She covered Xena's hand with her own. "Thanks to you." Xena pulled back and let Gabrielle finish her story. "We all became very close, but Seta and I...well... we became lovers." She glanced at Xena expecting a cold look. Xena simply nodded for her to continue. "It was so strange, I had felt an outcast for so long I had no idea what belonging really felt like, but in her

arms, with her touch, it was all there. All that was missing in my life I found in her eyes." Gabrielle blushed hotly. "I was very much in love, and we were happy. We spent all our time together, talking sometimes, but mostly...hmm..well you know. But she was promised too, and her wedding day soon arrived. I wanted to run away with her, but Seta knew we couldn't stay together. I was devastated, I didn't understand how could she leave me. It took a long time for me to realize she didn't leave me at all. She's still with me every time I feel lost, every time I don't think I fit in." Gabrielle smiled at Xena. "Every time I feel that way I look at you, and thank her." Xena returned her warm smile.

"Just before Draco attacked my village. I had decided to leave, with Seta gone there was nothing to keep me there. I knew it was impossible to marry, knowing how I felt about women. So I gathered my clothes in a bundle and waited for the right time. Unfortunately there was a problem. I had arranged to travel out of the village in the wagon of a trader who was passing through." Xena's eyes widened. "The tavern owner." Gabrielle shrugged her shoulders. "The tavern owner, I thought I could pay him with dinars, however he expected a somewhat higher price." She grimaced. "When I refused he hit me, took my money, my clothes and left." She looked up at Xena's fiery gaze. "He didn't recognize me this time. When you went to get Argo, I decided to have a talk with him." Gabrielle's eyes glowed at the memory. "He was surprised to say the least at my sudden appearance. He even offered me money this time around. I can't say I was flattered." Gabrielle's lips twisted into an ironic smirk. "I'm not entirely sure, but I think it will be a long time before he has any amorous feelings again."

Xena smiled at the image. She opened her arms and Gabrielle dropped gratefully into the warm embrace. "Well my little bard there is more to you than I ever imagined." Gabrielle snuggled closer into Xena's warmth. "You can't tell a bard by her stories." She grinned. "What happened to Seta?" Xena asked. Gabrielle's hands trailed up the warrior's body her fingers teasing. "She's still married," She lowered her lips to Xena's neck. "Last thing I heard she had two lovers, one a lovely blonde woman with a penchant for storytelling." Xena's laughter filled the darkness.
