Once Upon A Time....

By Rosemary

Prologue:

Once upon a time there was a great warrior named Xena. She was filled with rage and loss because her home and family had been destroyed. She lay waste to kingdoms and villages with little thought or regard. Until one day a legendary man entered her life his name was Hercules and he unchained her heart from the pain and suffering of the past, and so she went out to right wrongs and protect the innocent.

Xena met up with a young girl from a small village, her name was Gabrielle. Together they traveled fighting for good, even as Xena battled with her past. They became friends and had many adventures. Their friendship deepened into love, each discovering their feelings at the loss of the other. For Gabrielle it came on a sunny day when Xena was struck by a dart, her strong body weakened. "It's not about me." Xena whispered, and then the powerful warrior died.

Gabrielle's grief was so great she screamed to the Gods "Why!" She pummeled a tree with her staff so mightily the staff broke, as did her heart. "Focus" She muttered. "Xena said to focus." The young bard was determined to fulfill her loves last wish, to be buried with her brother. She fought a murderous band of raiders just to bring her home. When she saw Xena alive again her heart burst with joy, but words failed her. "You don't want me to get all mushy on you." She joked. They were together again and that was enough for them both. For Xena it came on her decision to go through dangerous lands to get to Athens. Gabrielle was hurt and she too died, but the warrior could not let her go. She breathed into her still warm mouth, and shook her fair head.

The men around her told her to leave her, let her pass over peacefully, but her cry was heard above all. "You don't know anything!" She beckoned and cajoled the bard to return to her side. "Don't you leave me, don't leave me." Her tears fell on Gabrielle's still face. Anger flowed through the warrior "Wake up, wake up," She screamed as she beat against the still body beneath her hands. "Wake Up!" She wailed. Gabrielle jerked into life. Her lungs gasping for breath. Xena pulled the young woman tight into her arms kissing her pale forehead and stroking her lovely face.

Never again, she swore in heart, would she lose Gabrielle. They left the temple Xena's hands firm around her bard. Refusing even to allow her to walk the simple path alone. And so they went into the woods, but in all tales there is evil my children, and so it is with this. Great love causes jealousy, hatred and envy to those who do not have it, and more so to those who fear it. So it was during this idle time that great storms were rising around the lovers. "They cannot be that close" Grumbled one God. "It's true," Says another. "Others may get ideas about their friendship" He finished smirking.

A powerful God one who spoke for some sort of majority said. "We must drive them apart, we will create a child for the warrior to show her attraction to men." The other Gods nodded solemnly. The powerful God stood, and weak and frightened men and women quaked at his voice. "It is unnatural," He bellowed. "That they or others should feel this way. It is a blasphemy to mankind and to the Gods. We will create a man to ride with them his name shall be Joxer, he will serve to drive a wedge between these women. All will be good now. And soon all will fear and bend to the power of my majority."

The Gods laughed together, their merriment causing lightening to streak across the skies. Gabrielle stirred in her lovers embrace at the great show of lights in the sky, her soft green eyes turned to Xena's blue. "Are the Gods angry?" She asked hesitantly. Xena smiled and ran her fingertips down the bards soft rosy cheek. "The Gods are always angry." Gabrielle settled back into her lovers strong arms. "Nothing will change for us will it Xena?" The warrior cast cold blue eyes into the night sky her lips curled into a contemptuous sneer, Xena who feared no man nor God, and certainly no majority, uttered resolutely. "Not if I can help it."
