More than 15,000 film, television, comic book and gaming fans are expected to descend on Wellington over the next two days for the annual Armageddon Expo.
American actress Katee Sackhoff, best known as cigar-smoking pilot Starbuck in cult TV series Battlestar Galactica, is among the special guests at the TSB Arena.
She will sign autographs and take part in panel discussions with fans in her first visit to New Zealand

While she is revered for playing one of the strongest female characters in television history, Sackhoff said New Zealand's Lucy Lawless, who also co-starred in Battlestar Galactica, was an early inspiration.
"I grew up watching Xena. I loved strong women characters and I still do. And Xena was the first female character on television on a weekly basis that was extremely strong. I just loved it.
"I'd always identified with the men in shows and I wanted to be Indiana Jones really bad and then I wanted to be Lara Croft. I've always wanted to be those characters."
