She's a character who hints at being from the Pantheon of ancient Greek mythology, but was in fact born entirely from modern imagination and brought to life not in the temples of the gods, but in west Auckland.

Xena, the 'warrior princess', continues to inspire a cult following of ‘Xenites’ to this very day. Everyone needs a hero, or heroine, and this feminist icon, played by Kiwi actress Lucy Lawless, certainly fits the bill.

So, in this week's episode we turn our attention to something a bit different – Xena’s costume, including her fabulous boots.

Renée appeared in commercials, including one for McDonalds, a feature film called Night Game (1989), and some work for The All New Mickey Mouse Club (1989) (aka “The Mickey Mouse Club) in 1989. She also made guest appearances on TV shows such as NYPD Blue (1993), before starring as “Deineira” in the Hercules TV movie Hercules: The Legendary Journeys – Hercules and the Lost Kingdom (1994). She caught the eyes of executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who cast Renée in the 1994 film Darkman II: The Return of Durant (1995). Soon after, Hercules’ sister show, Xena: Warrior Princess (1995) was launched, and Renée was cast as “Gabrielle”, Xena’s trusty sidekick.

Until 2001, Renée resided in Auckland, New Zealand, where “Xena” was filmed. She was married to restaurant owner Steve Muir (a kiwi, or New Zealander) in October 2000, in Austin, Texas, and they had a son. However, after the series ended, Renée returned to Texas and was divorced from Steve. In 2005, she had a baby girl with her new boyfriend, actor Jed Sura.

This will be Renee O’Connor’s debut appearance at Atlanta Comic Con!

Feeling Seen Documentary Videos: Nicole da Silva and Steven Sears

Beth, the producer of the new documentary Feeling Seen shared the following videos of Nicole da Silva (Frankie from the Australian hit tv show Wentworth) and Steven Sears – who needs NO introduction to Xena fans but I’ll give him one anyway (love ya Steve). Steve is the executive producer of Xena Warrior Princess, writer, producer and all round talented guy. These two awesome people are supporting the Feeling Seen Documentary.

AUSXIP is supporting FEELING SEEN. It’s a feature length documentary about the impact of lesbian, bisexual, and trans/masculine representation in mainstream television.

MegaCon Orlando Update: Renee Will Not Be Able To Attend

Bad news for those going to Megacon in Orlando. Renee won't be there due to a scheduling mixup.

realreneeoconnor
Well, good news, Eddie Wilson (my step-father) and his music venue from the 1970’s called ‘Armadillo World Headquarters’ will at last be exhibited in a documentary about the origins of country music in Texas. The exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame opens the weekend of May 25th, with guest artist from this landmark era of music and art in Texas.

I have been booked to join Eddie and my family for this celebration of his legacy in Austin for a very long time. I’m so excited for him!

Bad news, I will be in Nashville not Orlando while Lucy is visiting. Megacon. The promoter for Megacon changed the dates and didn’t notify me until two days ago. Sorry gang. Please give Lucy a hug for me and come by the exhibit in Nashville. I’ll be there! ??. https://www.instagram.com/p/BiZ4tbVAgt8/?taken-by=realreneeoconnor

Being A Xenite by Carmela Scalzo

Image

I came across this excellent piece of writing by Carmela Scalzo. What does it mean to be a Xenite? Are you new to the fandom? If you are, have a read and discover what the Xenaverse is about and what it means to be Xenite (a fan of Xena Warrior Princess). If you're an Amazon Elder, you already know what the Xenaverse is about but it's really nice to see it written out.

Many thanks to Carmela for the use of your work.

BEING A XENITE:

It’s not just about Lucy Lawless. It’s about Xena.
But it’s so much more than that.
It’s not a religion. It’s not a cult.
It might sound that way when we talk about it, but I promise you, it’s more than that.

It’s about the cosplay. The merchandise. The stuff. The swag. The fan-made music videos, art, comics, jewelry, memes. But it’s not.

It’s also about the friendships. The stories. The not taking ourselves too seriously.
It’s about the infinite and ever-morphing inside jokes, the astounding creativity, the drinking, the dancing, the fun and laughter, and parties... but not really.

It’s about providing a safe place for the displaced to find their Tribe. It’s about realizing that we are each of us alone until we find each other. It’s about discovering that that different person over there isn’t so different if only we would start with “hello, my name is ____.” It’s about taking that chance to stand by the fire, strip down, paint ourselves blue and howl at the moon. Because it’s funny, but also brave and healing and freaking awesome. It’s about creating a community that is strong, supportive and mind-blowingly loyal.
And it’s so much more than that.

Yes, at its core it’s about a TV show. It’s about the message and spirit of a TV show that preached a never-ending search for ways to serve the Greater Good. It’s about growing as a person. The struggle to conquer our fears, to improve ourselves, our lives, our relationships with each other and the world. To gather together in order bless those who NEED.

THERE IS SO MUCH NEED.

It’s about doing whatever we can to make it better.
And we found that we CAN DO THESE THINGS because WE DID THEM!
It takes courage to seek positive change. Change within and around us.
It’s about keeping up the fight for a better future for all.
It’s about taking pride in knowing that our courage will change the world.
(written April, 2016, C.C.Scalzo)
